PITTSBURGH Former vice president Joe Biden was campaigning for the Democrat in a tight southwest Pennsylvania congressional race Tuesday, a show of the partys growing confidence in a candidate a week ahead of the election.
The Trump administration, meanwhile, is stepping up its efforts to rescue the once-safe GOP seat that is competitive despite millions of dollars spent on Republican-backed ads. President Trump, who won the district by double digits in the 2016 presidential election, and top officials will campaign for GOP candidate Rick Saccone in the coming days.
On Tuesday afternoon, one week before the March 13 election, Biden made two campaign stops with Democrat Conor Lamb, a former federal prosecutor, in Pittsburghs suburbs. On Saturday, Trump will hold a rally for Saccone, a state representative whos run as an ally of the president.
When the media asks me, Isnt President Trumps popularity waning? I tell them, Listen, youre in Trump country,? Saccone said Monday night at a rally with 60 supporters in a rural part of the district. When I start to feel sorry for myself, I think of my president and what hes doing. Everybody seems to be against him, and he needs a lot of help.

(32,579 posts)The 18th Congressional District was never "deep-red," as reported in the newspapers. The previous Representative Tim Murphy R won re-elections through GOP gerrymandering. Before the 2011 redrawing this area was close to 50/50, or roughly 45/55 depending on the contest.
The new PA Congressional District map will change this area again, for the better. However it won't go into effect until after the special election for this seat.
