Reports: Akin Advisers Make Preparations For Withdrawal Tomorrow
DAVID TAINTOR 2:40 PM EDT, MONDAY AUGUST 20, 2012
Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin's advisers are making preparations to withdraw from the race Tuesday, GOP operative Richard Grenell and RedState.com editor Erick Erickson report. Grenell cited "GOP sources" in his tweet announcing the withdrawal, which has yet to be confirmed by Akin. Akin has been under fire since saying women have biological defenses to fend off pregnancy after a "legitimate rape."

This is awful !!!
If he drops out before 5pm tomorrow then Claire McCaskill will probably have a new opponent that is not as crazy/extreme

(28,158 posts)There's a good chance he may be leaving the campaign. Whether he knows it or not.
His link to Ryan on the issue of rape is toxic to their campaign. Maybe they're hoping if Romney comes down strong against his words, and Akin's leaves, voters will be placated enough to drop the issue?

(48,988 posts)Tuesday the 21st is apparently the last day that Republicans can change their ballot in Missouri.
Akin squeeked out a victory in a near three way tied race: Brunner second, Sarah Steelman third (endorsed by Sarah Palin). I get the feeling that a lot of Akin voters prefer Steelman to Brunner.
Who would the Repubs choose? What mechanism would they use? (Yes, I know it is delightful to watch them reel and writhe in agony, but I'm curious.)
Whatever the outcome it is a national mess and Ryan has been rightly tarred with Akin-ness. But nothing is in the bag until the votes are counted and certified.

(135,060 posts)Possible Republican replacements, the source said, include three former senators: John Ashcroft, Jim Talent, and Kit Bond. Other names being mentioned include former Ambassador Ann Wagner, who is running for Akin's now-vacant seat; and Auditor Tom Schweich.

(5,818 posts)according to Chuck Todd this morning. But after Aug 21st, withdrawing costs money (for reprining ballots) and requires a court order. IMO neither of those requirements would pose any serious problem for deep-pocketed Missouri Republicans, with plenty of judges in those pockets.

(36,974 posts)Missouri law does allow Akin to withdraw from the race somewhat later than tomorrow although Akin must still voluntarily agree to step aside, and his ability to withdraw after tomorrow is not guaranteed:
Except as provided for in section 115.247, if there is no additional cost for the printing or reprinting of ballots, or if the candidate agrees to pay any printing or reprinting costs, a candidate who has filed or is nominated for an office may, at any time after the time limits set forth in subsection 1 of this section but no later than 5:00 p.m. on the sixth Tuesday before the election, withdraw as a candidate pursuant to a court order, which, except for good cause shown by the election authority in opposition thereto, shall be freely given upon application by the candidate to the circuit court in the county of such candidates residence. No withdrawal pursuant to this subsection shall be effective until such candidate files a copy of the courts order in the office of the official who accepted such candidates declaration of candidacy.

(3,194 posts)That law you cited allows for a withdrawal after tomorrow, but does not mention whether a replacement can be named past the deadline.
I'm just assuming that tomorrow will be the last chance for the repubs to put someone in his place, but I am not familiar with political law.

(5,818 posts)I don't know why I picked Chuck Todd's voice out of the TV babble twice today.
On his show this morning, he said nothing about the ability of Republicans to replace Akin on the ballot. On his brief appearance on NBC Nightly News, he made a point of saying August 21st was the last day Akin could be replaced.
With all the resources of a major TV network at his disposal, Todd must have access to the best experts on Missouri election law. But, since people here have not found clear definitive legal language on the deadline for replacing Akin, and courts must get involved after tomorrow, I wonder whether the right lawyers and the right judge might not get someone other than Akin on the ballot as late as September 20th. IMO, without absolute legal clarity, any ballot change physically possible might be made to fly. If Akin's name can be taken off the ballot as late as September 20th, would it not be POSSIBLE to put someone else's name in Akin's place that late in the process of distributing physical ballots to absentees and to polling places?
cabot
(724 posts)Apparently, there's a difference.
In a way, I'm a bit disheartened. Claire would have won easily. If he's replaced, it gets more difficult for her. Unless all of Akin's voters are pissed and stay home.

(3,855 posts)Or is he aborting his candidacy because the Republicon establishment forced him to run, or did he run of his own volition? Why didn't he scream? Was he dressed provocitavely in a 3-piece suit with a red tie and flag lapel pin? Didn't his body have a way to shut down the campaign on it's own? Oh, it was his mind that did that for him, I see...
PossumSqueezins
(184 posts)Todd Akin was just trying to educate the public about the differences between forcible and elective rape. Forced rape is very rare and resulting pregnacies are even more rare. However, when women and children electively choose to be raped, pregnancy and illness may result and the rapee must accept responsibility here.
It's a shame Mr. Akin is leaving the race. He needs to be out there front and center educating the public and mobilizing his base. It's good when Republicans like Mr. Akin get to voice their um....interesting...and, um....medically informed...opinions.

(48,988 posts)The Republican Senatorial Committee has announced it will not give Akin any financing. If he stays in without GOP Sen. Committee financing, he'll siphon donor bucks from elsewhere, even from some out of state tea party rank and file. That's money down a rat hole and money not going to other races against other Democratic nominees.
SheilaT
(23,156 posts)Also, party politics being what they are, the Republicans can't actually force him to withdraw. They may simply redouble their efforts to get him elected.
If he actually does pull out in time for the Missouri Republicans to select a new candidate, McCaskill will still have plenty of ammo against whoever that replacement is, making it clear that the Republicans are so incompetent they can't even choose a candidate who can stay in the race.

(48,988 posts)Good for you that you read DU. Your post still fails on its premise. Steelman came in third, is not a team player, and thus is not liked by the Missouri GOP decision makers. Thus there is no way she will be the nominee if Akin quits which would cause a mad two week scramble by the state GOP and a decision by fiat and not another primary.

"It is terrible that you are playing video of the properly nominated Senate candidate from Missouri. We already threw him under the bus."
We should just keep playing that video over and over. This is today's Republican Party.
And keep asking Ryan/Romney what they think about the Personhood concept. And keep asking them what they think about equal pay for women.
Every time they protest we are continuing to use Akin's words, it just calls attention to the fact that the whole bloody lot of them are from the Dark Ages.
