Canine war heroes mistreated by U.S. Army: Pentagon report
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - They made up a corps of bomb-sniffing dogs that accompanied brigade combat teams on potentially lethal missions, sniffing out roadside bombs in Afghanistan and saving human lives.
In return for their combat service, the U.S. Army mistreated these canine heroes when they were discharged from the military, the Defense Departments Inspector Generals Office said in a report issued on March 1.
An investigation was started after soldiers who had handled the dogs complained about the fate of their four-legged saviors.
Army personnel who handled them said that once the dogs returned to the United States, some were left in kennels for up to 11 months, mistreated through lack of care and attention, and others may have been put down, according to the report. No screening was done of people who wanted to adopt the dogs.

(12,497 posts)Some troops returning from Europe at the end of the war sneaked the Army dogs on board the Queen Mary for the ride home to adopt and take care of them.
My father said that due to disease concerns, the MPs gathered up the dogs (about 10 or so) a couple of days out of Southampton, and tossed them off the stern alive together to swim and eventually drown due to exhaustion.
My Dad and thousands of other troops were enraged having to see this sickening site happen in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and sanctioned by the Army.
Definitely not a public story. Disease concerns? I'm sure they were vaccinated.

I can't imagine there wouldn't be people standing in line to adopt these dogs if they knew about them, and were given the opportunity. I'd take one in a heartbeat.
