School shooting: Suspect in custody in shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Florida today -

Source: CBS News

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Several people were killed and multiple people were injured in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida on Wednesday, prompting a massive police response and manhunt as frightened students hid in their classrooms.

The Broward Sheriff's Department said there were "at least 14" victims. A law enforcement source tells CBS News senior investigative producer Pat Milton that the victims include fatalities.

The sheriff's department tweeted after 4 p.m. that a shooter was in custody. They said the scene was still active. A male that fit the description of the suspect was seen being taken into custody, CBS News' Jeff Pegues reports.

Broward County Schools superintendent Robert Runcie confirmed there were numerous fatalities, but couldn't confirm the number.

5. Yes.

It's why my 12 year old son violates school rules every single day by keeping his phone in his pocket so he can call or text me if/when something like this happens. His idea not mine. He isn't alone in this practice.

14. My daughter visited her former grade school classmates for a day in their new high school.

She was there for a football rally during school but then rumors began circulating there was going to be a shooting at it. Kids began calling their parents on their cell ponies and by noon the school was half empty. Needless to say, there was no rally and the school was practically deserted by dismissal time.

3. disgusting....

someone posted a cell phone vid in another topic where you could hear the shots. Sounded like a semi-auto with a large clip. I counted almost 15 rounds without a reload.

But I'm sure thoughts and prayers will be available for all. And that it is too soon to talk about it......

6. Why is Trump 'allowing' violence done to our students?

Why is Trump 'allowing' violence done to our students?

When Trump accepted the GOP nomination:

"I have a message for all of you: the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon come to an end," he said. "Beginning on January 20th, 2017, safety will be restored."

7. I am so fucking tired of this

I'm to the point where I would not ever want to have children in the United States and would only want to raise them in another country where this sort of shit does not happen. You pretty much fucking goddamn well know what the standard GOP action plan is going to be here. Fuck face and his groupies in Congress will make a bunch of noise about thoughts and prayers but will do fuck all about the actual problem.

10. I am glad I don't have to practice "active shooter" drills

in my elementary school anymore. Having "routine" drills with 6 years olds was not what I signed up for when I chose to teach. Having the flu and being sick in a germ filled room is preferable to being shot at though. A Valentine's Day celebration seems an unsettling juxtaposition for today's classes.

All it takes is one time.. One accomplice.. One misunderstood situation..

I can't picture any other workable way for them to solve this problem.

It's on us to prevent them from HAVING to solve this problem.

25. This is a dangerous social problem

We need to address the root of the problem: we have a society where people are becoming sick or misanthropic to the point that they feel that shooting up their school is the only answer. Even worse; schools are becoming even more like a depressing prison with some schools having uniforms, security guards and metal detectors.

If you treat people like criminals they will become criminals. The toxic environment of schools is breeding psychopaths and anti-intellectualism. The opposite of what a place of learning should be.

We need to focus on students mental health. We also need to ensure that students are not being bullied, have a decent home-life, future prospects and we need to stop ignoring students that are potentially dangerous.

I'm in my 20's, so I still remember what high school was like; I remember that bullying was not only ignored by teachers but that the teachers themselves were often toxic. I remember that violence was ignored too. Classes were disruptive and nepotistic. I learnt DESPITE my school instead of because of it.
Now imagine an unstable teenager in that environment and it's not too hard to see why these highschool shootings happen.

Last edited Thu Feb 15, 2018, 08:23 AM - Edit history (2)

They are monsters. But they're also mentally unstable to the point that they think they can get away with shooting a place up. We have to wonder why our system/society is producing more and more people like this.

EDIT: Actually, you know what? I take it back. In countries with gun restrictions this kind of stuff is far less common. Mental illness is a factor, yes, but if they couldn't get guns so easily in the first place then there would be a better chance of catching these violent psychopaths before the worst happens.

30. It needs to be harder to own guns

It needs to be a lot harder to own guns.

Republicans are not going to do this for us. We need to elect more Democrats who will pass legislation to reduce gun violence.

33. Well on the right the typical argument is

an AR-15 is simply a "tactical" looking semi-auto hunting rifle.

Not saying this is your argument or not but one I normally hear.

So I would be fine with extra requirements needed for anyone to own a semi-auto long rifle, all of them. For example I live in PA and own semi-auto long rifles and I can't use them deer hunting anyway. I'd be fine with them not allowing any new purchases of them. We'd still have the bolt-actions, pumps and single-shot's. Oh well, we'd get by.

Then there is the discussion of what to do about semi-auto handgun's with large ammo capacity. I'd start with the previous point and work on this point after as I think it would at least be a step in the right direction.

Do I think that legislation could happen in the U.S.? Maybe. Keep it targeted at only long rifle semi-auto's and don't completely ban them. Perhaps just require people to have an additional "tax stamp" to own them like they have to have with suppressors.

34. Nice to see some actual gun knowledge there.

Usually folks go off on a long diatribe that is entirely factually wrong.

Yes, the whole AR-15 is entirely about "looks" although it makes for great ergonomics and weather resistance. A semi-auto rifle is a semi-auto rifle.
