Porter blamed ex-wife's black eye on a fall in off-the-record meeting with reporters

Source: Politico

When now-former White House staff secretary Rob Porter sat down for an off-the-record meeting with four reporters hours after the publication of a Daily Mail story showing his first wife with a black eye, he was quick to deny the allegations of physical abuse.

The reporters present for the meeting — the New York Times’ Maggie Haberman, the Washington Post’s Josh Dawsey, Axios’ Jonathan Swan, and the Wall Street Journal’s Michael Bender — pressed Porter to explain the picture of his first wife with a black eye as well as his comment that he had taken the picture in question. He told them what he had told his colleagues: that, on vacation in Florence, the two had quarreled over a Venetian glass vase, and that his then wife, Colbie Holderness, had fallen and bruised her eye.

Porter, who until that point had been seen as one of the most competent and trusted aides in the West Wing, also confirmed that he was resigning his post, but White House press secretary Sarah Sanders and two other communications aides – Josh Raffel and Raj Shah – interjected that White House chief of staff John Kelly had urged Porter to stay, according to a person familiar with the exchange.

The meeting, at which Porter also conceded calling his second wife “a f***ing bitch,” was arranged by Sanders as the scandal mushroomed on Feb. 7 and seen by one participant as an effort to give Porter a chance to defend himself while letting the White House distance itself from him by not speaking on his behalf. The reporters, in keeping with the off-the-record terms, did not use the information conveyed in the meeting.

You know, if he'd just said that publicly, I think we could have cleared everything up MUCH more quickly.....

1. "She fell" Gee, no one ever said that before as an excuse.

What a clever defense. He must have worked on that brilliant idea for a whole nanosecond.

2. Yeah, women just fall and bruise their eyes, run into doors, etc. all the time.

They're just accident prone and clumsy.

31. Keep digging that hole, Mr. Porter!

A wife beater always believes he can con the woman and everybody else. Unfortunately, when you abuse 2 wives and 1 girlfriend, the gig is up.

6. Difficult to get a black eye from falling

the eye sockets are kind of protected by the brow ridge bone and to a lesser extent the bones of the face

I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but if something does penetrate the area in front of the eye socket, it has to be small enough to bruise that area

9. Ive always wondered the same thing. Like "I ran into a door". With your eye?

Like you say, its a protected part of the body. Although ive seen black eyes before that werent from a punch, it had been from a car wreck. Which is easily explained.

10. As I stumble around in the dark at night

I run into a door maybe once a year or so. This might happen when I decide not to turn on the light, and forgot I closed the door because it's cold or noisy. I get a bruise above my eyebrow. It's not widespread, more like a petty lump where contact was made. It's not a black eye.

I've pretty much decided that they were going to try to say she was injured by something at the hotel where they were staying. Why else would he take the picture?

16. My ex-wife and I were once humorously arguing over

who would wrap a small vase to send to her mom in China for her birthday. We were tugging on it, it slipped, smashed on the floor, she jumped and stepped on a piece and cut her foot.

So, who knows maybe the ventian story is true...

It shows that you are aware that your behavior is known to you to be abhorrent.

This piece of shit should not be entrusted with being a garbage collector.

27. That is Story B. Story A is Porter FAILED HIS BACKGROUND CHECK & FAILED HIS SECURITY CLEARANCE

The domestic violence story is disgusting and unacceptable. Trump, Porter, and Kelly are all disgusting and unacceptable.

But as the Orange Anus keeps telling us how sad it was to lose Porter and whines about due process and unproven allegations -- keep your focus on the fact that Porter already had his "due process" in the form of his FBI background check, which HE FAILED. Anyone who wants to argue WHY he failed can take it up with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

When the Mad King mumbles on about how Porter is the victim in this narrative, stay focused on the fact that Trump, Kelly, and Porter were all cool with Porter weighing in on the nation's most sensitive top secret material AFTER HE FAILED HIS BACKGROUND CHECK. Porter is no victim -- he got real special treatment for a year.

Never forget that.

18. I have a friend who used to pick people up around the waist and spin them vertically

like upside-down and then right-side-up. it worked great if you were ready for it. he was a tall, big guy. 6'-2", 225. he did it to me and I was 6'-0", 185.

the last time he did it, he did it to his GF when she wasn't ready. she was tall (5'-11" ), and they were both drunk.

she would up stumbling into a street sign and got a shiner. she went around telling everyone her BF gave it to her. she thought it was pretty funny.

true story.

19. First, Porter is a liar

Second, I can report that you can get black eyes without direct contact with the eyes or eye socket. As a child I ran head first into a boy's head. We were both going for a ball in the air, running full steam. It was a forehead to forehead smack. It knocked me unconscience. He was left standing, rubbing his head. When I came to, I ran home crying with a bloody nose. My mother could not figure out why I was crying since all she could see was a bloody nose. Within a few minutes a huge knot appeared on my forehead; the next day I had two black eyes which turned colors over the next week before they faded away. My parents were none too pleased with having a child with black eyes. At least the boy went to my school so he could vouch for my injury not being parent-inflicted. Anyway there was no contact with eyes. I suppose if I had fallen face first on concrete or if a door hit my nose, I could have had black eyes.

22. TOTAL FUCKING BULLSHIT.

I've had more than a few scrapes in my time resulting in black eyes (or worse..)
There is NO WAY.... and I mean NO FUCKING WAY someone gets a black eye by "falling down"..

Admit it, scumbag, you punched her in the face. Admit it. While I have absolutely no respect for a coward like yourself beating on a woman, at least you can somewhat make amends to yourself and perhaps your family by admitting you are a worthless, cowardly, piece of disgusting shitbag jerkoff....

That being said....I hope you die of stomach cancer. AND I hope its painful.

This is why we need abortion on demand. This worm should have been aborted.

23. "She fell down."

Ahhh, that old chestnut, the tried and true fabrication of the "man" who's made a career out of beating up on women. The misogynist remark about his second wife is the icing on the scummy cake.

There's no form of life on the planet lower than a man who would beat up a woman. This is the "best and brightest" that Trump has brought to the upper echelons of our government. One more thing to keep in mind when dealing with a Trump supporter who's proud of their politics.

Hard to keep track sometimes, isn't it? Is America "great" yet, or does he have more up his sleeve?

25. so, if my wife or girlfriend call the police and reported that I hit her, and they came out....

to investigate. Saw the black eye, she said I hit her, I say no, she just fell and hit the floor, who would the police believe, her or me.

I would be taken to jail.

He deserves jail time for hitting her.
