United States is under attack': Intelligence chief Dan Coats says Putin targeting 2018 elections

Source: USA Today

The nation's top intelligence officials said Tuesday that Russia is targeting the 2018 elections as it seeks to undermine America's political process and sow partisan division with cyberattacks and other digital disruption.

"Frankly, the United States is under attack," Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told the Senate Intelligence Committee, adding that Russia is attempting to "degrade our democratic values and weaken our alliances."

In unequivocal language, Coats said Russia President Vladimir Putin has been emboldened by Russia's successful interference in the 2016 presidential elections and is now targeting the midterms.

"There should be no doubt that (Putin) views the past effort as successful," said Coats who was joined Tuesday by the nation's other top intelligence officials, including CIA Director Mike Pompeo, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Coates may want to look for a new job soon...Shitler must be having a heart attack today over Coates and Yates...if he had one.

until they agree to police for Russian bots and ban them and delete their posts once they find them.

6. It's all social media, really

They're on Twitter seeding both sides of the fence, and other social media as well. Cannot contact anyone without having your mail box filled with people who obviously not fully fluent in the English language. They must be using the info to profile everyone, then they can turn the mind altering emails on us. How did we become so weak minded? Everything and everyone is fluid. In the 50s everyone was rigid minded, and that was criticized over the decades, now they're mentally malleable.

8. But we know what the source of that mind alteration is. I don't understand why people don't

just walk away from those polluted sources.

I've never been on Facebook or Twitter, so I get that I'm not the one to understand this, but it seems self evident to me what should be done.

30. paper ballots and end voter suppression schemes

Any reports on how many legitimate voters were turned away because of Rethug schemes?

Any reports on how many voter registration rolls were tampered with by Russia's Republicans in order to turn away voters? (Thinking specifically about the 'purges' and how easy those would be to manipulate).

After all, the electronic records include party affiliation. Don't want Dems voting? Change their address to another state or make a duplicate name to get them purged, etc.

Either we overwhelm the in-place cheats in November or we lose the country. The traitors in power care only about their greed and maintaining power.

10. Yes, well we were in a predicament

everyone was tired of war, we couldn't turn on an ally, there was no guarantee of the outcome with the Soviet Union under Stalin, who knew who had the bomb, and there was Japan still to be defeated. Patton may have had great instincts, but he was off the reservation so to speak. Plus the domestic political fallout ... we had been supplying the U.S.S.R. with materiel, it would have been turned on us and the public would have justifiably gone nuts!

23. We would have been the aggressor nation

and responsible for damages, resettlement, occupation of a country we hardly understood. We surely lacked sufficient people with Russian language skills. Europe was already a mess, we were in occupied France for several years to get the country on its feet, also Germany and Berlin into the 1950s. It would have been very expensive too, and everyone was broke except the US, and we'd just had 5 years of rationing and scarcity to feed the war machine. No credible case can be made that we should have invaded and defeated the Soviet Union in 1945. It was not a fault of politicians, it was the limits of feasibility and what a generation was able to deliver and could be expected to endure. We couldn't even handle the dismantling of Nazi Germany easily, there were refugees, spies, former officials, hardships, humanitarian concerns.

25. I don't disagree

But we heavily armed a nation that was actively butchering and forcibly relocating people as we were giving them loads of guns and trucks. There weren't a lot of other solutions, but millions paid the price for letting Stalin have free reign.

It's like nuclear power; it might be a necessary evil, but we're still putting a burden on out decedents.

7. Senator King asked them if they have told the moron

that Russia is already repeating the hacking into our elections using the same techniques as the last election and they need to tell him that the collusion issue is separate from this and something needs to be done by him now. The W House staff has said that no one can tell him this since every time they try to he throws a tantrum and goes ballistic for hours.

13. Yes we are at war, in the same way as 9-11

because in both instances foreign adversaries are exploiting our freedoms for their own economic hegemony and financial exploitation. He's trying to close our borders to Mexicans and Arabs, but in different ways others face no barriers to entry.
It is pootentially treasonous. If this were the 1950s there would be an uproar.

15. Meanwhile, Keebler Beauregard is in charge of some of these guys

and is doing not a damn thing about this. He "recused" from the "collusion" probe but that shouldn't impact what is going on with the Russian hacking... Yet his and Kirstjen Nielsen's IC heads are basically repeating what the previous administration's IC heads said a year ago, and as we know, nothing has changed.

And he said his biggest fear was that Russia would see a coming “blue wave” and alter vote totals in favor of Dems absurdly to make it obvious that the vote had been hacked in order to completely delegitimize the electoral process and perhaps even blame it on another country such as North Korea or Iran.

All they really have to do is push that narrative using the same techniques they have been employing. It's not like "facts" have to actually be factual for certain portions of the population to believe something and run with it.

of the general election means a dispirited electorate and a suppressed vote turnout. That’s EXACTLY what Trumpy and the GOP want. So Trumpy will never object to Russia’s hacking of any part of the election process.

32. A united front between all Americans despite political differences is the probably the only way to

really combat this. Of course the technical stuff can be dealt with, but the influence campaigns using social media are what is really making things worse. Unless the influential republican politicians and talking heads get on the right side and help convince their base that this isn't acceptable, then this is going to continue to be a problem. But if we all came together to work against these Russian trolls (and whoever else) by ignoring and calling them out even when they support "our side" or our narrative, then we can lessen their effects. I'm not sure I have much faith in the American people to do that at this point in time.
