Police: Man pointing gun at his own head killed by officers
Wilson Ring, Associated Press Updated 5:58 pm, Monday, February 12, 2018

WILLISTON, Vt. (AP) — A distraught man who was pointing a pistol at his own head was shot by police as he walked toward two officers next to a busy interstate and refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, state police said Monday.

The man died at a hospital shortly after the Sunday shooting in the breakdown lane of Interstate 89 in Bolton, said state police Col. Matthew Birmingham.

Benjamin Gregware, 42, of Sheldon, did not point his weapon at police before he was shot three times, Birmingham said. State police Trooper Christopher Brown and an officer from the nearby Richmond Police Department fired 12 shots total at him.

It was the third fatal shooting involving Brown in the last six months. He also was involved in a nonfatal shooting several years ago, Birmingham said.

1. Sounds like suicide by cop.

3. So the trooper couldn't try shooting him in the leg or some or other non-lethal spot?

Especially when the guy wasn't pointing at anyone except himself. Wow!

10. No. You don't aim for the legs.

It's too easy to miss, and that bullet keeps going, and who knows where it's going to land? You always aim for center mass.

22. Yea.? Shooting 12 bullets with only 3 hitting the guy is safer than a leg shot?

You may not shoot for the leg but if it was me I would. A kill shot is not always the answer. You can stop bleeding, you can't fix a damaged heart etc.

13. This would actually

be way more reckless than shooting for the torso. You'd be risking people that were completely uninvolved with the incident with a shot like that. I get the sentiment, but nobody gets trained to shoot for the leg.

19. If you have a pencil in your hand these chicken shit cops would take a kill shot.

Because they feel threatened? Training my ass. This guy gets off on it.

24. Let's not pretend this was a procedural firearm safety issue.

In this case however, none of that applies. The shots fired were from the highway towards the embankment. In essence, the victim himself was the only individual threatened by any shot from the police to his direction.

Let's not pretend this was a procedural firearm safety issue. I get the sentiment, yet outside of the odd hack, nobody believes this was the only possible outcome given both the number of LEOs present as well as the victim never pointing his weapon at anyone other than himself.

21. Leg shots can be as lethal as anywhere else on the body.

Only in Hollywood is a leg shot considered non-lethal. In real life, shred the femoral artery with a bullet and blood will flow like water out of a hose. You’re dead before the ambulance arrives.

If they're scared of being shot, why don't they leave? They're not doing anybody any good.

5. 3 fatal shootings in 6 months?

That seems very high, statistically speaking.

8. Especially in a small town in Vermont (population under 9,000).

Doesn't seem like an environment which would require frequent violent interactions with police.

12. I don't know the facts, but they will come out. My guess is that 3 fatal shootings

in 6 months by one officer in Vermont is not just "unusual" but something that has never happened before.

Unusual is too polite a term. And this time, this officer obviously did not have to shoot this man. He was pointing the gun at himself. Very very sad.

25. Yeah. I realize that suicide by cop is a real thing

but there are cops who go their entire careers without killing anyone. It sounds like this guy is in the wrong line of work.

9. Same thing happened in Albuquerque

A few years back a mentally ill guy threatened to kill himself,
and the cops killed him ...

because ...

"They feared for their lives"

Big lawsuit. I think the family won.

14. Well, that's ironic. Maybe they should've winged him.

I bet there's some protocol when there's someone w/a gun pointed at anyone, they have to shoot at the main part of the body or something. But it plays out differently if the gun is pointed at the one w/the gun.

16. This is just bizarre.

At first blush, I'd interpret this as a suicide by cop incident. It's unfortunate, but it does happen.

However, this cop is involved in three fatal shootings in six months? And a non-fatal shooting a few years ago? Statistically, most cops will never even fire their weapon during their careers, and this guy's done it not once or twice, but four times? This makes it very difficult to rationalize the suicide by cop interpretation.

I really, really hope they scrutinize this and the other incidents involving this officer, because he seems way too inclined to open fire. Methinks law enforcement might not be the career for him...

Imagine a world where there are so many guns nobody dies by a bullet no more.

18. 12 shots ? They really like to empty their magazines.

Always taking the kill shot. Makes me not want to call the cops anymore. What was this cop thinking? Oh boy I get to shoot someone again!! I hope this haunts him forever. Trigger happy freak!

20. Remember when cops used to talk down people from bad situations?

Ah, the good old days. Now everyone is just fearful for their life and eliminating threats.

26. Yes, and some still do. So they talk someone down..and he ends up in a hospital. Then he

is there for a while, and he improves enough to go back to a job and his family...and doesn't cause anymore trouble...Say that happens, then

do you suppose that will make some front page news in some newspaper, or the lead story on the evening TV news?....naw...........if the cop does his job, and society saves the person with extensive treatment in hospital and post hospital..

..it won't make any news at all. Except to the family of the person saved. They will remember. And maybe a few friends. And the person saved will remember, the kindness of the cops and dedication of the hospital and workers....

23. Protocols

Officer Safety 1st.

Seattle's seen police shootings from people holding knives walking towards police. As if they're going to throw the knife and kill the cop instantly like in a movie. They ignore orders, they're going to get dead fast. They've shot kids holding pens.

Police don't seem to know another way.
