Top Justice Department official Brand quit partly over fear she might be asked to oversee Russia probe
by JULIA AINSLEY

WASHINGTON The Justice Department's No. 3 attorney had been unhappy with her job for months before the department announced her departure on Friday, according to multiple sources close to Associate Attorney General Rachel Brand.

Brand grew frustrated by vacancies at the department and feared she would be asked to oversee the Russia investigation, the sources said.

She will be leaving the Justice Department in the coming weeks to take a position with Walmart as the company's executive vice president of global governance and corporate secretary, a job change that had been in the works for some time, the sources said.

As far back as last fall, Brand had expressed to friends that she felt overwhelmed and unsupported in her job, especially as many key positions under her jurisdiction had still not been filled with permanent, Senate-confirmed officials.

2. Does anybody else think she let us down?

I feel that she chickened out when her country might have needed her the most. She chose the easiest road for herself.

If this comes down to Trump firing Rosenstein and then the solicitor general assumes control over the russia probe and then shuts that down... Will she have huge regrets for the rest of her life.

That is a distinct possibility.

3. given the cowardly display of quitting, i'm guessing she would have caved to donnie's pressure.

if she had the backbone to stand up to him, she probably wouldn't have quit.

14. And she is going to work at Walmart, so that adds doubt to me about her ethics.

15. not merely "working for" walmart, but defending in court every nasty thing they do.

in theory i shouldn't prejudge, she might provide them excellent counsel and try to get them to behave properly.

but i have my doubts.

again, there's that lack of backbone thing....

4. I read somewhere her husband (who is also an attorney) represents Rick Gates.

So it would have been a conflict of interest.

12. Yeah, if true, I'm glad she won't have that power.

Seems she would have caved. She has taken a job at the same firm that represents Turd. Gee, I wonder how that happened?

10. I do think people accepting such very high positions in government,

especially at DOJ, should think of the job an as meaning something beyond personal career considerations. It looks as if she could see something messy coming and decided she didn't want to be in the storm. A principled resignation if asked to do something she did not agree with would have had far more significance for the country.

16. Nah! She said "I'm outta here" just like all the others who've quit that dysfunctional...

clown admin.

I don't blame her for getting away from the stench.

IMO though going to Walmart is not great.

She should've taken her time as other opportunities would have come her way for having the good sense to realize after just 9 months that working an extended time for trump is not a good thing on the resume.

5. If she had those fears

she never should have taken the job.

I actually have a pretty low opinion of anyone that would take a job in this administration.

9. Everything is proceeding according to plan.

Soon the entire government will go to the dark side.

The Russians have lowered their expectations from a civil war in the U.S. to an economic collapse, but maybe they are premature.

It's the biggest Russian intelligence operation of all time, but it does depend on the republican party to keep it on track.

17. That was cowardly of her. A bit selfish too.

(This is my opinion that characterizes the nature and motivation of her decision, not of her personally. It's not an attack.)
