Dozens at White House lack permanent security clearances

Source: The Washington Post

By Josh Dawsey, Matt Zapotosky and Devlin Barrett February 8 at 8:09 PM

Dozens of White House employees are awaiting permanent security clearances and have been working for months with temporary approvals to handle sensitive information while the FBI continues to probe their backgrounds, according to U.S. officials.

People familiar with the security-clearance process said one of those White House officials with an interim approval is Jared Kushner — the president’s son-in-law and one of his most influential advisers.

The issue of clearances has become a major area of concern since White House staff secretary Rob Porter resigned after allegations surfaced that he had been violent toward his two ex-wives — accusations he has denied.

White House spokesman Raj Shah defended the administration’s handling of the matter, saying it was following proper procedure in letting the investigation proceed.

3. Just a thought

Could Trump if he weren't president, get a top national security clearance, and doesn't he also have to fill out a form getting it even as the president? Did he also lie on it , if he had to fill one out, or talk to the FBI ? Did trump approve others not to have to disclose their Russian meeting on their forms? Didn't this Rob guy have to fill out a form for a clearance, and did he lie too on it?

Send him off in a desolate wasteland called Florence, Colorado.

Nothing to see there. 23 hour lockup.

32. "I'd rather see him isolated, breaking down mentally,"

He already IS "isolated" and" broken down mentally"..... and psychiatrists worldwide have already classified him as "mentally unstable", so that won't make any difference.

You put him with a bunch of non-European people who don't speak English, and who have nothing to lose, and take away the Faux Snooze and twitter machine, and that will be a living hell.

28. The president does not require a security clearance

The "vetting process" for the president is "being elected".

The notion that the president - as commander in chief of the US military - would require a security clearance, is absurd.

44. So much irony given where we are today. Any f'in asshole can take over the country

Just because the asshole has been elected. No vetting. No controls over our election process.

Don't the intelligence agencies need to do proper background checks on the purported pResident-to-be?

This has become a sham rather than an attempt to secure our nation. Maybe that's the benefit of this whole calamity. We may see that things need to be changed - I hope in a direction of far more transparency.

7. And how many people are there in the Trump D.C. mob summit who...

...need such clearances, given his disinclination to fill such posts? Ummm... a number that also falls under "dozens".

To not be Republicanly Correct about it, the number Trump White House employees lacking proper security clearance is just about all of them.

14. you need a security clearance to be granted unescorted access to west wing.....

Everyone who steps foot in there needs a background check, or they need an escort - even to the rest rooms.

So pretty much every staff member in the white house. And since a lot of those have disreputable backgrounds, a lot are running into issues. Even that kid who lied on his resume would be denied a permanent clearance.

It's protocol to revoke a temporary clearance once they decide not to grant permanent. Why this wasn't done in the white house is criminal.

They are security risks so why are the involved in handling secure data? Russia is having a field day running operations against this Trump administration.

15. I've held clearances....

They take a long time to complete if you aren't currently active (they deactivate you if you change jobs and no longer require access).

It isn't "unusual" for a clearance review to take a year to 18 months.

But, the protocol usually is that once the fbi determines you won't get a permanent clearance, you lose you temporary immediately.

Sometimes the delays are mundane - people you listed as knowing you 20 years ago can't be located so you need to give them other names. Sometimes, they are just sticky - like you have a foreign national in your family or you have close family members living abroad.

But everything we are hearing is not normal. To do the staff sec'y job, you literally need a security level so high, it's designation is classified. So does the chief of staff.

For this guy to be allowed to do that job a minute past the time they declined him even secret clearance is criminal. Of course, the president can grant him access directly, but there is no evidence he did that. Kelly doesn't have the authority to do that.

13. Security clearances in the Trump administration are merely window dressing

Let's face it, Trump has already given out most our secrets to Russia and Jared has given them to China. At this point the only people who don't have top secret, compartmentalized, FEO presidential information are our allies and a handful of American citizens.

And as a General, you would think Kelly understood the security clearance requirements....but obviously not.

42. Why should WH staff be given secure info when they are predicted by security personnel to be a risk?

See when you lie on your forms you are not cleared. That means you are a security risk.

Why should WH staffers be given secure information when they are predicted by security personnel that they are most likely to be a risk?

Meaning, they will, highly likely due to their previous actions, pass the information on to foreign governments or other unauthorized people.
