Rep. Meehan won't seek reelection

Source: Politico

Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Pat Meehan will not seek reelection this year, after revelations that he used taxpayer funds to settle a sexual harassment case involving a former staffer.

Meehan’s decision came days after the New York Times reported that the former aide had accused him of making unwanted romantic advances and that he settled the case with the staffer by paying her out of a member’s allowance fund.

During media interviews this week, the congressman denied that he sexually harassed the woman and vowed to run for reelection. He said the woman invited his communications and called her his “soul mate.”

Meehan, a suburban Philadelphia Republican, was first elected in 2010 as part of the GOP’s House takeover.

8. IIRC, Ryan told Meehan to repay the money

he used for the settlement. Maybe calling the money severance, Meehan can get out of having to repay it.

12. "The district looks winnable," - This was Joe Sestak's (D) seat in 2006 before Meehan got it

after redrawing the boundaries after the 2010 redistricting. The area had already moved to purple when Sestak ousted 10-term Congressman Curt Weldon (R). Sestak won 2 terms before resigning to run for U.S. Senate to replace Arlen Specter. His loss unfortunately brought us teabagger Toomey.

Here is how PA-7 looked for each Congressional session at census time during the previous 6 censuses, leading to the 7th and most recent redistricting that manufactured an (R) seat -

PA-7 voted for Hillary by the way.

13. Fwiw, even Repub spinner Chris Cilizza admits he's guilty.

Are there any Republican legacies from the 2010 election who haven't misused taxpayer funds or smashed through other ethical or legal constraints?

Bits of Meehan's letter as reported by Cilizza:
Oh, Pat Meehan. No, no, no, no.
..."You are and have been a complete partner to me and you have brought me much happiness." In the letter, he also argues that there is more to come for the two of them. "As we travel our paths together, I am comforted that there is more unwritten," writes Meehan.

He says that "in hindsight" he should have been more aware of the power dynamic between the two -- he as a member of Congress and she as a staffer. Then he offers this doozy: "There is no hierarchy -- we call it Team Meehan."
