Senate Democrats blocked a spending bill on Friday night that would have prevented a government shutdown. The procedural motion to advance the bill needed 60 votes to pass.

But then how can this be pinned on the Democrats? Democrats should point to that McConnell vote just to rub his nose in it.

7. So, even understanding that McConnell's vote was procedural

I guess I will be on solid ground rebutting my mouth-breathing RW co-workers by saying that as many Democrats voted for the bill as Republicans voted against it. So I'll ask how do they square the logic of the assertion that "Democrats voted to shut down the government" when the Democratic support was undercut 100% mathematically by Republican defection from their own bill. Also, a higher percentage of Democrats bucked their party to vote *for* the bill than the percentage of Republicans who voted *against* it. So many ways to spin it. We acted in a more bi-partisan fashion, but we can't vote in lockstep with Republicans any more than they ever voted in lockstep with us.

Then, when they go look up the word 'logic' and wrap their brains around it, perhaps I'll get an answer, but I doubt it.

I have no doubt the Republicans would have had the votes.
This is more of the “Go ahead and vote your conscience, since your vote won’t matter anyway”.
This is status quo for every vote for both parties. You can almost guarantee that they will change if the numbers are there.
