13 captive siblings forced to shower once a year, strangled, subject to frequent beatings: Prosecutor

-- Prosecutors revealed grisly details in a press conference today about the captive siblings case out of California.
-- The brothers and sisters were subject to repeated beatings, including strangulation, and were punished by being chained up, often for weeks or months at a time, prosecutors said.
-- The victims weren't released from their chains even to go to the bathroom and were only allowed to shower once a year, according to prosecutors.
-- The children were rescued Sunday after a 17-year-old escaped and alerted authorities to what was happening.
-- Prosecutors said the teen plotted the escape with her siblings for two years.

The California parents accused of starving and shackling their 13 children allegedly forced them to shower only once a year, never took them to a dentist, and strangled and beat them routinely, prosecutors said today.

David Turpin, 57, and Louise Turpin, 49, were arrested on charges of torture and child endangerment after their children were found Sunday at their home. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office described the residence as "dark and foul-smelling."

The "depraved" details were shared in a press conference led by Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin today.

The abuse intensified when the family moved from Texas to California, Hestrin said. The victims reported that the punishments started many years ago with their parents tying them up, first with ropes. When one victim was able to escape the ropes, "these defendants eventually began using chains and padlocks," Hestrin said.

UPDATE:

CA Torture House Dad Charged With ‘Lewd Act on a Child’

David and Louise Turpin were charged in court for their crimes holding their 13 children hostage in their own California home. Criminal charges include torture, abuse of a dependent adult, child abuse or neglect, and false imprisonment. David Turpin is charged with one count of “lewd act on a child.” In a Thursday press conference, Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin described how the children were restrained on their beds for weeks at a time and were subject to frequent beatings and strangulation. The 17-year-old who successfully escaped and notified police had worked on an escape plan for more than two years. The pattern of abuse reportedly started when the Turpins were living in Fort Worth, TX and got worse over time. Their bail is currently set at $9 million.

The family was largely kept distant for twenty year according to the sister of the Turpin woman. Her father had tried to go and visit but was warned/refused away. At most they saw the first couple of kids years ago but they were family that were largely gone from the overall family dynamic.

In West Virginia, the paternal grandparents, James and Better Turpin, told reporters that they were "surprised and shocked" by the arrest and charges, according to ABC News. They haven't seen the children in five years. Though they remembered them looking thin, they claimed they were a "happy family." David and Louise Turpin, the grandparents say, have Pentecostal faith and had many children because "God called on them." The children were subject to "very strict homeschooling" in which they were made to memorize Bible passages.

I wonder if others are doing the same thing with their children. I hope authorities are looking into if it's some kind of nutty cult.

Horrible beyond belief. They can't dig a hole deep enough under a prison for these monsters.

The "mother" is 49, and the youngest child is 2. Is that child really her biological offspring? Or is one of the adult children the mother? (It's not impossible to conceive/bring a baby to term with one's own 46-year-old eggs, but not very likely, either.)

But, aside from that... seven adults, ranging from 18-29 years, held hostage in these horrifying conditions? The "parents" are 49 and 57. How did they manage this level of control? Are the offspring basically severely disabled as a result of such a deprived environment?

Its certainly possible its one of the kids children, which would add another layer of horror. On the other hand, its sort of a theory that women who have children on after another are more likely to maintain their fertility to a later age. Its natures joke that people like this were able to keep pumping babies out that they abused.

I cant even think of how that 2 yr old may have been treated. 😞

The presser states they hadn't seen a doctor in 4 years. So at some point there was contact with civilization.

Sounds like sadistic personality disorder to me.

What troubles me about personality disorders is they can be unrecognizable in mild forms, yet bubble along under the surface and effect behavior. Control freaks, for example, as these folks were, can also be mild, yet ruin just about any initiative by their manipulating, cajoling, and arm-twisting. Yet few would recognize that as having sadism as a root.

Conservatives deregulated homeschooling and took a hands-off approach. When liberals in CA got power, they did not put their hands back on. I guarantee you that people in that community knew something was off but didn't want to be the one to call CPS.

After this, they should go full on hardass. Increase funding for the child protective services. No more playing nice with homeschoolers. The rules get tightened up. If any homeschoolers have an issue, they get looked at first.

21. Abuse in house of torture was 'severe, pervasive, prolonged'
Thu Jan 18, 2018, 10:12 PM

Amy Taxin and Brian Melley, Associated Press
Updated 7:57 pm, Thursday, January 18, 2018

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A California couple tortured a dozen of their children for years, starving them to the point that their growth was stunted, chaining them to their beds for up to months, preventing them from using the toilet at times and forbidding them from showering more than once a year, a prosecutor said Thursday.

"The victimization appeared to intensify over time," Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin said in announcing charges. "What started out as neglect became severe, pervasive, prolonged child abuse."

David Turpin, 56, and Louise Turpin, 49, were charged with multiple counts of torture, child abuse, dependent adult abuse and false imprisonment. David Turpin was also charged with performing a lewd act on a child under age 14.

The litany of physical and emotional abuse was enough to invoke a house of horrors that apparently went unnoticed for years in California and Texas until Sunday, when a 17-year-old girl managed to escape and call 911.

When they first made contact with the 17 year old girl they thought she was under 10 because of the malnourishment. I honestly don't think there is a punishment bad enough for people who would do this to their own kids. Abuse of those who can't stand up for themselves can not be tolerated.
