Passenger jet skids off runway and comes perilously close to plummeting into sea in Turkey

Source: London Standard

A passenger jet carrying more than 150 people came perilously close to plunging into the sea after it skidded off an icy runway after landing at a Turkish airport.

The 162 people on board the plane had a lucky escape when the wheels of the Pegasus Airlines flight dug into the mud at Trabzon Airport, leaving it dangling off a cliff.

Officials said all passengers and crew on board were evacuated and safe on Sunday, and that the airport was closed while the incident was dealt with.

No injuries were reported.

It looks fairly intact.

12. Amazing, when you think of the moment it went over the edge

the front of the plane had a long way to drop as it tipped. Perhaps it was moving very slowly by that time, so it took a few seconds for the centre of gravity to get past the edge.

Engine speed surge reportedly caused Turkish plane to skid off runway

ANKARA, Turkey -- A Turkish media report says the pilots of a plane that skidded off the runway and down a slope toward the sea have told investigators that the plane's right engine experienced a sudden surge of speed that forced it to swerve to the left. The Pegasus Airlines Boeing 737-800, with 168 people on board, went off the runway at Trabzon Airport, northern Turkey, late on Saturday, stopping at an acute angle only a few meters away from the Black Sea.

All passengers and crew were evacuated and no one was injured. The airline said in a statement that all those on board disembarked safely.

The private Dogan news agency said Monday the pilots told investigators that the plane landed normally but that the engine's sudden increase in speed caused them to lose control.

Authorities at Trabzon Airport on Monday were making preparations to tow the plane off the slope.
