Graham: I 'fully believe that if North Korea goes to the Winter Olympics, we do not'

Source: The Hill

BY REBECCA SAVRANSKY - 01/02/18 10:43 AM EST

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Monday said if North Korea goes to the Winter Olympics, the U.S. should not attend.

South Korea is hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics, set to begin next month in Pyeongchang.

On Monday, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made comments about the Winter Olympics in a New Year's Day speech, indicating that the nation was ready to attend the games.

“North Korea’s participation in the Winter Games will be a good opportunity to show unity of the people, and we wish the games will be a success,” Kim said, according to NBC News.

Similarly, you do not punish a legitimate attempt to play nice with others.

The Olympics are partially founded on this principle.

As much as people want to deride NK, part of their positive rehabilitation path is going to involve treating them like a legitimate nation and giving them the chance to be responsible, and running away from that is only detrimental.

It's like if your child has a problem playing with knives...after so much "no, no, no, no" you have to surrender back some of the responsibility and give them a chance to do it right with supervision: "Here, I'd like you to slice up the meatloaf...thank you for your help."

NK participating in the Olympics is a good thing. The US boycotting will not hurt them, and make us look bad and unsportsmanlike. We are not at war with them. We need to play nice.

I'm delighted that the Republicans are acknowledging that a sporting event is a right and proper place to register a protest.

Of course, by not attending, winning medals and saluting the flag at the medal ceremonies, it does raise the question of whether athletes hate the armed forces?

One of the biggest problems with the Olympics being in SK is the threat that they could be potential victims of a NK attack.

Wouldn't letting them send a nominal contingent of athletes go along way towards alleviating that concern?

I think it is a bluff anyways. Kim does not want any of his people to experience any manner of life on the outside for fear of shattering the image that has been created.

The only thing that would do is hurt America's reputation and our athletes. NK has been at other Olympics, this is stupid. I think drumpf doesn't want America there so Russia can take all the medals, that's the country he really loves, not ours.

SK would suffer the most if war were to start with NK, so no, drumpf is no friend of theirs and is more likely their enemy. He's the enemy to democracies everywhere and friend to dictators and tyrants who bribe him.

True spirit of the games sort of thing.

So many families were separated to never see each other again over a stupid war that accomplished nothing.
