Minnesotans Dont Think Franken Should Resign; Franken Remains Popular, Especially With Women
Source: Public Policy Polling
A new Public Policy Polling survey of Minnesota voters finds that a majority dont think Al Franken should resign from the US Senate, and that he remains popular in the state, particularly with women. Key findings from the survey include:
-50% of voters think he should not resign, to only 42% who think he should go through with his planned resignation. There is little appetite from Democratic voters at the state level for Franken to go, with 71% opposing his departure. A majority of independents- 52%- as well think he should not resign, with just 41% favoring his exit.
-Franken remains well above average in popularity for a Senator, with 53% of voters approving of the job hes doing to 42% who disapprove. PPP rarely finds Senators with majority approval in their home states. Frankens continued popularity is being driven especially by women. 57% of them like the job hes doing to 37% who dont. By contrast Donald Trump stands at 40/58 with women in the state.
-Minnesotans dont like how the process with Frankens resignation has played out. 60% think the Senate Ethics Committee should have completed its investigation (including 79% of Democrats and 61% of independents) before any decision was made about Frankens future, while only 35% think he should resign immediately. Beyond that 76% of Minnesota voters think their voices should have been more important in determining whether Franken stayed in the Senate or not, to only 12% who think that should have been determined more by his fellow Senators in Washington.

(3,577 posts)If she would go to Franken and urge him to reconsider because of constituent opinion, at least until the result of an ethics investigation is known, and make her feelings public so Minnesotans would flood his email and phone with pleas to stay . . . The chances of that happening are rather small.

(6,931 posts)Why would Franken want to work with the current party members that threw him under the bus? Gosh...wonder if they've scratched their heads wondering WHY no others have come forward since his resignation announcement claiming he "groped" them too?? Why GASP.....could this just have been a Republican HIT JOB with YOU and other Dems doing the dirty work for them Gilly?? Good luck on your 2020 Presidential announcement.
Franken "groping" his last accuser..........

(11,574 posts)The accusers stopped coming since Franken resigned, and the ones that did come were weak sauce at best even with an overactive imagination. It does seem to have been a hit job.
I wonder if the Democrats who asked him to resign considered that by doing as the Republicans wanted, perhaps in order to say: "no tolerance for sexual misconduct of any kind--now your turn" they have made themselves sitting ducks. With such a low bar set for the type of accusations needed to force a resignation, thanks to the Franken precedent the Republicans can set-up any Democrat now.

(54,330 posts)Their funding for his "accusers" will have dried up, their work having been done. On to the next target.
That so many Democrats, including ones I otherwise admired and have actively supported, either fell for it, or at least didn't discount the possibility that they were being played, is something that disturbs me greatly.
And we have to live with the precedent set by forcing out one of our best so quickly and on such shady accusations in order to show Republicans we have zero tolerance and will even oust our own.
Who will be next?

One day, someone of rational thought may even offer objective evidence to support the premise. Until then though, it's merely one set of absurd allegations versus another.
Little more than simplistic human nature to do as much, I'd guess.

(31,109 posts)Oh, I think I see.
So your conclusion is even if it means MORE republicans in power, by golly that is what you will go for?
What if NO progressive runs that you agree with and it is any democrat against any republican?

2 - I would only donate to a progressive (I said that before, did you not read?)
3 - I'm not rich and only donate to people out of my area that I really support, can't afford to send $$ to all districts.
4- I have never in my life voted repug or even failed to vote for the democratic candidate so your snarky insinuation is mean and wrong and you owe me an apology.
You should be ashamed of yourself.

(9,865 posts)Really mad at Gillibrand and hope Franken will run as an Independent and then caucus with the Democrats. We need him too much to let this be the final end.
Maybe after a term of "good behavior", the Democrats will let him back in and he can have a "D" after his name again.
Will write and encourage him to do all this.

(11,238 posts)Any Democratic senator is as good and as effective as any other Democratic senator, dontcha know.
Tina Smith might be a terrific person, but she's never been a legislator. She'll be a freshman senator. She has to learn all the arcane rules of the Senate, while having to begin campaigning for the special election in November 2018 almost immediatelythen, soon after that, she has to begin campaigning for the regular election in 2020.
As a freshman senator, she'll vote the way the leadership wants her to vote and, most importantly I think, won't take up any of the air in the room that whoever is gearing up to run for prez will need for herself.

With all the great candidates out there that listen to the voice of the people, we don't have to spend anytime or energy or donations on folks we think stabbed us in the back.

I dont know where to start.
Oh, and just so you know, NOBODY on this board came to Al's defense FASTER or more FREQUENT than me, go ahead and do a search.
NOBODY here supports him more than I do, many do as much I am sure, but nobody more.
But FRANKEN himself would say no matter what you do, VOTE for ANY Democrat in November.

(28,813 posts)Nobody is saying we wont back a Democrat in a GE.
That is years away. Now Im supporting with my time and energy and donations, candidates that dont agree to stab fellow Dems in the back.
That list of Senators made a calculated political decision that turned out offending a whole bunch of us.
Until they admit their error then I have nothing for them.
You make it sound like actively supporting other Democratic candidates instead of ones you dont agree with is some kind of bullheadedness.
Nose held or otherwise we will be voting for Democrats. Its better to have a tarnished friend than a shiny enemy. But I dont have to be part of any polishing. They can do that by their actions.
If Gilli is so great, have her step up and admit her plan has gone dreadfully awry.
And yes, I do know you were right there for Al from day one. I have great respect for you Eliot.

(37,748 posts)I keep hearing that unsupported allegation.
But no doubt, supplying objective evidence to support it is simply "playing into their hands" or some other trendy-though-irrelevant bumper-sticker popular with the kids who ironically call themselves skeptics.
