Racial dispute at beloved bakery roils liberal college town

OBERLIN, Ohio (AP) — Students at Oberlin College have long enjoyed pastries, bagels and chocolates from Gibson's Bakery, a century-old, family-owned business near campus. That sweet relationship has turned bitter amid hotly disputed accusations of racism, roiling a school and town long known for their liberal politics.

The dispute, which began in November 2016 with the arrest of three black Oberlin students who tried stealing wine from Gibson's, is now a lawsuit in which the exasperated bakery owners accuse the college and a top dean of slandering Gibson's as a "racist establishment" and taking steps to destroy the family's livelihood.

Caught in the middle are longtime residents of this town of 8,300 people, many of whom identify themselves as liberals but who have patronized Gibson's for decades. Many believe the timing was right for the conflict to boil over; the arrests came the day after Donald Trump won the presidential election, electrifying students who had long heard suspicions of racial profiling at Gibson's.

"I can understand why people were looking for some outlet for their frustration, but it's just counterproductive to bend that anger towards a small family business that to my knowledge is not guilty of the sort of racial profiling that people accuse it of," said retired Oberlin professor Roger Copeland.

1. Certainly a sign........

of the times that we live in with IQ45 and his followers leading the way.

I'm sure there's more to this story - but conditions are such that it may be difficult to ever hear all of it...............

2. they pled guilty

From a local news source:

The incident became racially charged because Allyn Gibson is white while the student and two others also charged in the incident are black. All three students pleaded guilty in August to misdemeanor charges and read statements into the record acknowledging that Allyn Gibson was within his right to detain the shoplifter and that his actions were not racially motivated.

Aligning with these kinds of causes just gives the right more ammunition, cancelling out the defenses of scum like child predator Roy Moore and genital grabber Donald Trump.

3. How is this racist?

"... police figures in the past five years that show only six out of 40 adults
arrested for shoplifting at the bakery were black"

"The three students arrested at Gibson's pleaded guilty in August to attempted theft and aggravated trespassing
and said in statements required by a plea agreement that their actions were wrong and that the store wasn't racist."

5. Apparently, Gibson's Bakery is supposed to call the college Dean on shoplifters instead of police...

...as if they were 12-year olds stealing gum from the supermarket checkout line and not grown adults.

They aren't on campus. The campus police have no jurisdiction.

So, you get one freebie at shoplifting when caught.

29. Walmart prosecutes every shoplifter

I was there one day when cops handcuffed a teen girl for stealing a $10 lipstick,
and put her in a squad car.

30. Not only that. Walmart sends a demand letter for civil damages -- 3 times stolen amount or...

... $200 dollars minimum. Pay or get sued for that plus attorney and court costs which could be thousands.

My little shit nephew (God kid. Honor roll and scholarship) got busted with his dumbfuck friends stealing $8 dollar pocket knives. My brother got the demand letter months later. We thought it was a scam until we researched it.

15. I don't see any racism in the facts stated in that article. Any business has a right

to protect against theft. Duh. The guys did in fact commit a crime once, trying to buy booze with a fake id. Then later tried to steal it. I don't see racism in that. They could have been black, blue, red, yellow, or white.

Sounds more like a vendetta, payback, for having the guys arrested.

4. 2015 decrying school dining hall's sushi and Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches as cultural appropriation

Lost me there. Not interested in anything further these students have to say about anything ever. Offering foods other than "burger with fries" or pizza (*cough* Italian cuisine *cough* cultural appropriation *cough*) is not cultural appropriation. It's expanding your palate you uncultured swine. Hell, the Japanese themselves are fine with their culture being spread, it's a compliment. Decrying foods beyond standard American slop being offered (many if not most are actually derived, "culturally appropriated" if you will, from other cultures) is simply you showing your white privilege in how you believe other cultures are not capable of defending themselves (from what, I've not seen convincingly explained) and only lily-white you can protect them.

Oh, and that quinoa you're eating with a spoon as you rage against the machine? South American and Neolithic, respectively. You're appropriating other, more ancient cultures. Oh, and your pants too. Paleolithic. Cultural appropriation!

Of course it follows they'd see racism where there was none. I read the article. Good god is this college and its students on the wrong side of the facts. Mob mentality. Their hearts are in the right place, but their heads are so far up their own asses it may as well be a dental school.

8. "burger with fries"

Might the 'hamburger' be appropriation from Hamburg, Germany?
And, let's not mention 'French' fries.

'Shirley', I'm joking.

9. And that's really my point, the whole notion is galling and absurd.

Look at any food or clothing or word or dance or song, go far enough afield or far enough back in time and you'll find it was "culturally appropriated" from some other culture. The people who use the term "cultural appropriation" as a cudgel (word culturally appropriated from Middle English, which culturally appropriated from Old English, which culturally appropriated from Proto-Germanic, which culturally appropriated from Proto-Indo-European, which culturally appropriated from...) aren't as enlightened and worldly as they think they are.

12. Such bullshit. More ammo for the RW. "cultural appropriation". What a joke.

It USED to be "expanding your horizons" not too many years ago.
Now its just another made-up thing to be offended about.
My .02 and worth about that!

Funny that they did not mention that the Trump family called their heritage Swedish rather than German at one time.

This is the kind of thing that will blow up on right wing news site highlighting the idiocy and lack of real world understanding of the left.

And they will be correct.

But they just stole wine. Kids.

I bet when the are 32 they will not be molesting 14 year olds.

20. An African-American student accused the owner of being racist

From what I remember, there was an African-American student who was told by Mr. Gibson that he couldn't sit at the outside table because he had not bought anything inside and that student then tried to organize a protest or a boycott of Gibson's and accused the owner of being racist.

22. Surely you jest? That's pretty much standard policy for ANY kind of business. Not remotely racist.

Buy something or leave. Restrooms are for paying customers. Tables are for eating patrons.

Unless the owners/staff were actively shooing away just the non-white visitors and lobbing racial epitaphs at them, there is no racism here. Christ O'Maley...

And also playing jazz piano and singing in a capella groups.

It was quite an experience attending school there in the 90s.

Back in the 70s, my friends at Oberlin didn't seem to have such tsouris. Of course, Oberlin didn't have a problem with anti-Semitism then either.

I wonder what changed?
