OBERLIN, Ohio (AP) Students at Oberlin College have long enjoyed pastries, bagels and chocolates from Gibson's Bakery, a century-old, family-owned business near campus. That sweet relationship has turned bitter amid hotly disputed accusations of racism, roiling a school and town long known for their liberal politics.
The dispute, which began in November 2016 with the arrest of three black Oberlin students who tried stealing wine from Gibson's, is now a lawsuit in which the exasperated bakery owners accuse the college and a top dean of slandering Gibson's as a "racist establishment" and taking steps to destroy the family's livelihood.
Caught in the middle are longtime residents of this town of 8,300 people, many of whom identify themselves as liberals but who have patronized Gibson's for decades. Many believe the timing was right for the conflict to boil over; the arrests came the day after Donald Trump won the presidential election, electrifying students who had long heard suspicions of racial profiling at Gibson's.
"I can understand why people were looking for some outlet for their frustration, but it's just counterproductive to bend that anger towards a small family business that to my knowledge is not guilty of the sort of racial profiling that people accuse it of," said retired Oberlin professor Roger Copeland.

I'm sure there's more to this story - but conditions are such that it may be difficult to ever hear all of it...............

My little shit nephew (God kid. Honor roll and scholarship) got busted with his dumbfuck friends stealing $8 dollar pocket knives. My brother got the demand letter months later. We thought it was a scam until we researched it.

(37,648 posts)to protect against theft. Duh. The guys did in fact commit a crime once, trying to buy booze with a fake id. Then later tried to steal it. I don't see racism in that. They could have been black, blue, red, yellow, or white.
Sounds more like a vendetta, payback, for having the guys arrested.

(6,810 posts)Lost me there. Not interested in anything further these students have to say about anything ever. Offering foods other than "burger with fries" or pizza (*cough* Italian cuisine *cough* cultural appropriation *cough*) is not cultural appropriation. It's expanding your palate you uncultured swine. Hell, the Japanese themselves are fine with their culture being spread, it's a compliment. Decrying foods beyond standard American slop being offered (many if not most are actually derived, "culturally appropriated" if you will, from other cultures) is simply you showing your white privilege in how you believe other cultures are not capable of defending themselves (from what, I've not seen convincingly explained) and only lily-white you can protect them.
Oh, and that quinoa you're eating with a spoon as you rage against the machine? South American and Neolithic, respectively. You're appropriating other, more ancient cultures. Oh, and your pants too. Paleolithic. Cultural appropriation!
Of course it follows they'd see racism where there was none. I read the article. Good god is this college and its students on the wrong side of the facts. Mob mentality. Their hearts are in the right place, but their heads are so far up their own asses it may as well be a dental school.

And, let's not mention 'French' fries.

(6,810 posts)Look at any food or clothing or word or dance or song, go far enough afield or far enough back in time and you'll find it was "culturally appropriated" from some other culture. The people who use the term "cultural appropriation" as a cudgel (word culturally appropriated from Middle English, which culturally appropriated from Old English, which culturally appropriated from Proto-Germanic, which culturally appropriated from Proto-Indo-European, which culturally appropriated from...) aren't as enlightened and worldly as they think they are.

Unless the owners/staff were actively shooing away just the non-white visitors and lobbing racial epitaphs at them, there is no racism here. Christ O'Maley...
