Bernie Sanders tells CBS that Trump ‘should think about resigning’ over his own sex misconduct scandals

BRAD REED
07 DEC 2017 AT 09:03 ET

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) told CBS “This Morning” that President Donald Trump should think about following the example set by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), who resigned this week after multiple women accused him of sexual harassment.

Noting that more than a dozen women have come forward to accuse Trump of sexual misconduct — and noting Trump’s own boasting of committing sexual assault on women in the infamous “Access Hollywood” video — Sanders said that Trump’s resignation is certainly something that should be on the table.

“We have a president of the United States who acknowledged on a tape widely seen all over the country that he’s assaulted women, so I would hope maybe the president of the United States might pay attention of what’s going on and also think about resigning,” Sanders said. Sanders also said that the conversation about sexual harassment needs to extend beyond disgraced Hollywood moguls and politicians — and move into the less glamorous world of corporate America.

“What I worry about right now, as we speak, in restaurants and in offices all over this country where you have bosses who are not famous, there is harassment of women and women are being intimidated,” he said. “We need a cultural revolution in this country.”

Nothing has to be true or proven, the allegations serve as judge and jury.

then we need to do everything we can to focus people's attention on Trump and Moore's far worse alleged predatory behaviors.

21. The point is that it is being said out loud and in a way that gives credibility to the women

I would assume that the strategy of Pelosi et al might be to set a lower bar on what is acceptable than existed in the past. This aligns Democrats with the people without power - on this issue, mostly women.

There are at least two areas where I have concerns.

One is that if the bar can be set too low, it may catch people based on bad joke (like Seder) intentionally misinterpreted by the right.

The second is that it could lead naturally empathetic politicians from reaching out and hugging someone (completely platonic) to give support or as they both celebrate a victory they worked on. So, many wonderful Obama pictures come to mind. This is a culture that actually FAVORS that type of person over anyone even slightly introverted. If even taking the generic picture with a congregant or supporter carries the risk that they could be said to have been inappropriate, will we see fewer opportunities where a politician is willing to do this?

Originally, I was going to add another - that many will find themselves questioned on things they did decades ago when mores were different. As I started to write that - my brain said "Ray Moore". While bad behavior might have been common in the culture in many industries and in state capitals and DC, it was NEVER really considered acceptable - even if most people were not outed for it. (Not to mention, the majority of sitting Congresspeople and Senators came after the Clarence Thomas hearing and after Senator Packwood's 1995 resignation after many allegations.) With the Clinton impeachment and those two cases, no argument can be made that they could not see the consequences. The accusations of Anita Hill will always be part of Thomas' legacy and impeachment will be part of Clinton's.)

I used google to get the year Packwood resigned and found this fascinating NYT article from a staffer of his Democratic opponent in 1992. https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/why-politicians-got-away-with-sexual-misconduct-for-so-long/2017/11/10/4bb1ecc6-c4d8-11e7-aae0-cb18a8c29c65_story.html?utm_term=.e6da68e898d9 It showed how he played the media to keep the issue out of a leading newspaper in the last weeks of the campaign. The campaign had made the decision that any allegations had to come from something other than them - especially as they were attacked for negative campaigning in the primaries. It also shows that though his behavior was known in DC and in the interest groups - he won NARAL's endorsement and a neutral position from other advocacy groups.

Given everything that came out (too late) in 1992 and through 1995, it SHOULD have been a cautionary tale that even a well respected (and he was) entrenched Senator could have his career end in the humiliation of a resignation because of his predatory behavior. I assume that most people who commit themselves to public service, initially do so to move the country in what they think is the right direction. I would further guess that after years of effort, they want to be remembered for the successes they had or the battles they fought - even if they lost. It has to mean something that few people can list anything other than resigning for bad behavior about Packwood.

Obviously, basic morality alone or respect for others alone should be enough that no one - in any field - should NOT know that harassment is wrong. Where there may be a little play in what constitutes inappropriate behavior, one possible test might be would you want that interaction to be public knowledge. If you think it would be embarrassing, you might consider not doing or saying it.

I said some choice words about him I never thought I'd say. And that is something that I never thought I'd say about him given how strongly I support the guy.

Maybe hedging his bets to stay safe with the fascists I guess? Whatever Bernie, don't think you are safe from the anonymous bullshitter brigade, you are sure as shit to be next to get drummed outta DC.

Oh, and just to clarify, Franken did not engage in sexual harassment.
Personally I think most who have half a brain can see that Franken's "accusations" were complete horseshit anyway.

Hence, the outrage.
