Marriage equality law passes Australia's parliament in landslide vote

Source: The Guardian Australia

Australia’s parliament has legislated for marriage equality, passing a bill almost unanimously to allow two people, regardless of sex, to marry.

On Thursday the House of Representatives passed a cross-party bill after an unprecedented national postal survey gave unstoppable momentum to legislate the historic social reform.

Australia, which changed the law in 2004 to say that marriage is only between a man and a woman, now joins 24 countries which recognise same-sex marriage.

The lower house passed marriage equality with almost all members of the governing Liberal-National Coalition joining Labor, the Greens, and crossbench MPs in a free vote to pass the bill which cleared the Senate last week without amendment.

It took a few hours, as the RWingers dug in with proposed amendments which were aimed at allowing civil celebrants to refuse to marry same-sex couples. Every one was defeated, for once not just along party lines, with a number of government members crossing the floor to vote them down with Labor and the crossbenchers.

It was noted that PM Turnbull voted for the amendments, but there he was at the end crowing with delight as if it was all his own work.

At last this government, which has proved to be the most regressive I can remember, has managed to come up to date on something.

Now, if only they could come out of the 17th century in their attitude to refugees.

2. It's becoming so obvious that the right wing (in most of the world) can only win by cheating.

Minority does not rule.
We're on to you, bastards!
You best be looking over your shoulders.

3. So now it only needs to be signed by the PM

or does it only need to go through parliament?

4. No, the PM doesnt sign it

Now that it has been passed by both houses, the Governor General performs a largely ceremonial duty of ‘signing assent’ to the bill....and it’s law!

8. The Bill has been signed into law by the Governor-General today.

That means that people married in other countries that already recognise same-sex marriage will have their union recognised in Australia from today.

But same-sex couples wanting to marry here under the new law have to wait one month, while all the protocols are put in place.

But nothing can stop it now.

9. Thats right...

But the one month waiting period isn’t just for same sex marriages. Anyone who wishes to marry has to give a one month notice of intent. So, at last, we’re all treated the same...

6. Great news

A couple of takeaways from the debate yesterday:

The Liberals (or LNP - Liberal National Party coalition) are not really liberals - they are our conservatives strangely enough. I get the impression that they are seeking to distance themselves from the Republican conservatives of the USA because of the association with Trump.

Maybe I'm wrong - maybe we just don't have the numbers and calibre of RWNJs here. I've been pleasantly surprised by the right-wingers in Parliament who came out strongly for this bill; Warren Entsch, George Brandis and others.

Truly a wonderful day, you rarely see so much jubiliation in parliament coming from both sides. Video below of the bill's passing. Fast forward to a little after 6 minutes, parliamentarians sing along with the gallery, the Seekers song 'I am Australian'.
