Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski announces support for repealing individual mandate, a potential boost to tax overhaul

By Damian Paletta November 21 at 10:01 PM

Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she would support repealing the Affordable Care Act’s individual insurance mandate, giving a potential boost to the Republican effort to pass a massive tax cut package next week.

“I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy, in order to avoid being taxed,” Murkowski wrote in an opinion piece published Tuesday by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner.

Senate Republicans’ plan to rewrite the tax code includes a provision to repeal the individual mandate, a part of the 2010 health-care law that requires almost all Americans to have some form of health insurance or pay a fine.

Murkowski was careful, however, to stop short of saying she would vote for the Senate GOP tax plan. She instead focused the entire op-ed on her views about the Affordable Care Act, emphasizing how Alaskans had paid $21 million in penalties under the law in 2014 and 2015 for failing to purchase health insurance. She wrote that “eliminating this tax would allow Alaskans to have greater control over their money and health care decisions.”

What was the fee for her joining in to deprive millions of people of their health care? The answer will be forthcoming, eventually.

122$ for a 30 day supply of Flomax..how is that control over ones "healthcare and MONEY" when big pharma can cause bankruptcy in families fighting cancers of all types? I just am reaching the end of my road and medical costs are unreal and I have medical insurance, what about the millions that will lose theirs if ACA is totally repealed...fuck these goddamn hypocrites and liars posing as representatives of the american people.

the prices are cheaper than what the insurance covers

Here is an example for the 90 day supply of Flomax:

https://www.goodrx.com/flomax?drug-name=flomax&form=capsule&dosage=0.4mg&quantity=90&days_supply=&label_override=tamsulosin

Keep in mind those are generic prices for Flomax

yet when this administration ends up taking my Medicare I honestly worked 55 years for and was promised to receive in this land of milk and honey and my VA benefits gained because of my service in another war/conflict based on lies by politicians and the money grubbing MIC I will be like millions of other at risk hard working honest people who believed the lies. To these people WE ARE just pawns. I will be glad to exit this place when my time here is over. It gets worse and worse with each passing day watching these evil people trying to take all our hard won benefits just so they can fill the pockets of the already insanely rich May this ship of state.....well I'll leave it there...sorry for the rant..and I'll research your link.

will have to use? How much will businesses lose as more people file for medical bankruptcy?

“I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy"?

Well what about the late enrollment penalties that Medicare Part B and Part D users have to pay if they delay signing up? Penalties for not having insurance is not something Obama invented.

“I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy, in order to avoid being taxed.”

But no problem using the taxpayer's money to pay for the emergency room visits they could not afford to pay because they could not afford the insurance, or refused to buy it when they could? You see no relation in the security of the nation with affordable and available health care?

Other way: “I believe that the federal government should not be forced to pay for the emergency room visits for those who refused to buy insurance because - Freedumb!!!”
