Allegations against Roy Moore have affected Senate race, new poll says

Source: AL.com

A new Alabama Senate poll, conducted Thursday, said the race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones is tied.

*snip*

The poll said Moore had 46.4 percent support and Jones had 46 percent support.

The poll - the first to be released in the aftermath of sexual misconduct allegations made against Moore - perhaps indicates the impact the story on the Senate race. A previous Opinion Savvy poll had Moore ahead by 5.7 points.

Most polls have reported that Moore held a 6 to 11 point lead.

1. Negative press affects poll numbers.

How shocking. Who would have thought?

Good thing he has more than a week to shake it all off and let the voters forget, unlike another candidate I won't bring up.

(NOTE: I'm not dissing the OP, just being surly that anyone is shocked by the effect and the timing of bad press.)

2. Actually a bit shocking

To have that result so fast in a state like Alabama where the Democratic candidate is akin to the Devil to many is indeed shocking.

I certainly hope he doesn't "shake it off".

4. Is it?

I don't mean to be argumentative, but this was splashed everywhere yesterday.

If they took a poll today, isn't that kind of the finger-in-the-air check that would reflect this?

It'll go away. Unlike the Hillary email thing that was timed as a critical strike that likely tipped the election. If that news had a few more weeks to dissipate, it might not have had such an effect.

5. yes

normally, they poll over a period of several days, and then need time to analyze the results to ensure they're balanced - i.e., if they surveyed enough Democrats or Republicans, enough minorities, enough men or enough women, etc.

It's a special to fill Sessions old seat on December 12.

8. So it makes sense.

Perhaps the instantaneous poll is showing because this is an internal R hit cause they want to get him out early, get someone new on the ballot with time to campaign.

Or, if they want to keep him, they got this news to drop early enough that he can shake the allegations off and have more weeks of Fox feathering his bed.

I could be wrong. I didn't take into account the verification of legit polls.

Unless this isn't a legit poll.

7. With this State

You might think there would have been a hardening of support after this revelation. In fact, go to al.com and read the comment section on the original article. It's frightening. Also look at the unwavering support he is getting from fellow GOPers in the State.

I am shocked that within 12 hours the move was so drastic in a state like Alabama.

9. Check out this twitter stream if you can

She talks about the culture of fundamentalists and the grooming of young girls to be brides. It's disturbing as hell and a lot more common than I thought.

14. To be fair though...

I'm sure most of those comments aren't actually from Alabama's residents.

They're probably a combination of alt-right and Russian troll farms.

11. I agree and wonder if the race was already moving to a tighter race due to other factors

Even if this was a poll where everyone was asked yesterday evening, it would seem too early to get the full impact of the charges. I would bet that the number of people who heard the charges was not near 50% and the percent who actually got a real sense of the detail of the charges is even lower.

With absolutely no knowledge, I think the fact that the majority of the responses failed to have a note of surprise that a "man like" Moore could have done this says something. The fact that some even went to arguing that there was nothing wrong with a 32 year old man fondling a 14 year old (without using those words) suggests that they are NOT in disbelief, but are into the next step - arguing why this is not that bad.

In fact, the story of the 14 year old is extremely wrong on so many levels. The fact that an Assistant DA, who would be seen by this girl and her mother, as a powerful respected member of the society took advantage not just of a child, but of a very vulnerable one. We know the mother was there for a child custody case. I doubt the family would have been in a position to challenge this creep.

13. Putting aside the fact that Moore is a complete asshat

And this isnít even about a Moore.

But doesnít it concern anyone that allegations about conduct that supposedly happened decades ago can destroy a reputation and derail a career when there is little chance of the target ever defending against the charges given the lapse in time? Iím sorry, but if a person has been victimized, it should be incumbent on him/her to come forward within a reasonable time so that an full and fair investigation can be conducted before memories fade, credibility can be assessed, and any material evidence can be gathered, analyzed and preserved. Iíve defended many Title VII sexual harassment lawsuits, and allegations of sexual harassment are not infrequently contrived. Itís very hard to prove a negative in the best of circumstances. It nearly impossible decades later.

15. WTF

It's a 14 year old girl in the state of Alabama 38 years ago. She and her family had as much chance of not being totally destroyed both mentally and probably physically by coming forward as... well as a 14 year old girl in the state of Alabama today--and a lot of other states, I might add.

12. That Moore is not down to .01% is shocking

You know, a few close family members and fellow child molesters. But this is the today's GOP.

Deplorable isn't strong enough anymore.

23. The Hill: Alabama poll: Moore and Jones tied following scandal

Alabama poll: Moore and Jones tied following scandal

http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/359817-alabama-poll-moore-and-jones-tied-following-scandal

By Ben Kamisar - 11/10/17 01:46 PM EST

Embattled Alabama GOP Senate nominee Roy Moore is tied with Democrat Doug Jones in a new poll on Friday, one day after accusations surfaced that Moore had inappropriate sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl decades ago.

Moore and Jones are tied at 46 percent in the new poll by Decision Desk and Opinion Savvy, with 82 percent of respondents aware of the new allegations leveled by named accusers in The Washington Post.

In RealClearPolitics's average of polls, which does not yet include the new poll, Moore is leading by 6 points. All of those polls were taken before the allegations of Mooreís sexual conduct were reported.

Since the lion's share of respondents were aware of the allegations, it's likely that the new revelations are in part responsible for tightening the race.

The Washington Post revealed on Thursday that an Alabama woman is accusing Moore of inappropriate sexual touching while she was 14 years old

Washington Republicans have rushed to distance themselves from Moore in the wake of the allegations. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has called on him to step aside if the allegations are true. And the National Republican Senatorial Committee has ended its fundraising agreement with Moore's campaign.

Despite that pressure, 54 percent of voters ó and 73 percent of Republicans ó do not think Moore should step aside as the party's nominee..........................................
