Trump judge nominee, 36, who has never tried a case, wins approval of Senate panel

Source: LA Times

Brett J. Talley, President Trump’s nominee to be a federal judge in Alabama, has never tried a case, was unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Assn.’s judicial rating committee, has practiced law for only three years and, as a blogger last year, displayed a degree of partisanship unusual for a judicial nominee, denouncing “Hillary Rotten Clinton” and pledging support for the National Rifle Assn.

On Thursday, the Senate Judiciary Committee, on a party-line vote, approved him for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

Talley, 36, is part of what Trump has called the “untold story” of his success in filling the courts with young conservatives.

“The judge story is an untold story. Nobody wants to talk about it,” Trump said last month, standing alongside Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) in the White House Rose Garden. “But when you think of it, Mitch and I were saying, that has consequences 40 years out, depending on the age of the judge — but 40 years out.”

They will undoubtedly have given cause to do so by then. Starting with Gorsuch.

19. considering someone unqualified isn't an impeachable offense; its subjective.

You can be a SCOTUS judge without ever hearing a case.

25. I may have misunderstood

I thought the ideas was that by the time he has presided in his position for a few years, there would be something he could be impeached for, if someone looked. It is unlikely he will get it right all the time.

What an injustice if he is allowed to keep his position.

28. Could the House create a bunch of judicial seats

And fill them with sane people? Doesn't the House control the funding? Cut them off.

There simply has to be a way to fix this. Get a super majority in the Senate and impeach the living fuck out of anyone Donnie Short Fingers and the treasonous Retrumplicans have put in these positions.

I've always said that it's great that the United States doesn't jail political opponents when we have a change in government... now I'm not so sure

2. No judge in any court should have a lifetime appointment.

It can only lead to an overindulged and jaded judiciary.

22. Agree

Lifetime appointments may have worked when the Constitution was written and the average life expectancy was shorter (35 years in 1776). But the average life expectancy is close to 80 now, and this creates a race to the bottom, in which Presidents of both parties attempt to appoint the youngest possible ideologue, while bypassing older constitutional scholars, so that they may have a more enduring impact on the Court. I’d like to see an Amendment to the Constitution imposing a single term of 20 - 25 years for SCOTUS justices with a mandatory retirement age of 80.

there will be a way to rid our government of the vermin and unqualified persons inhabiting these posts. I swear, there will be.

We cannot be enslaved to mindless ideologists who want to banish peaceful existance and a healthy planet in trade for greed and delusion.

We will find a way.

11. Email, call, FB and/or tweet every one of the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Comm and ask

what qualifications does this man have that you found acceptable to approve him for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

-Never Tried a case
-Only a Lawyer for 3 years
-Unanimously rated “not qualified” by the American Bar Assn.’s judicial rating committee
-Has displayed overt partisanship re: NRA and Democrats

Here are the members

12. He still has to face the full Senate

He only needs a simple majority, and so far this Senate has been resistant to Trump’s stupider ideas...like putting someone who hasn’t been in a real courtroom yet on the federal bench.

18. There was some votes recently that I saw posted on DU

that were 49 - 47. So there are folks not voting and/or not around. There were a couple nominations voted on the past couple days that had that type of split - https://www.senate.gov/legislative/votes.htm

Paul hasn't voted the past week and Pat Roberts (R-KS) has skipped some of the nomination votes too (as well as Tester & Menendez who I know is in a trial).

15. Trump ridiculous amount of judicial appointees will punish us for decades

since he packs the courts with young extreme conservatives for lifetime appointments fundamentally altering the judicial future of this country in a very shitty way. A future Dem president or Congress is going to have our agenda blocked by these judges for a very long time.

Was to cause harm.

Retrumplican voters were promised that if they elected Retrumplicans, they would hurt people that they wanted to be hurt.

That's it. That's their entire agenda. Vote for us and we promise to hurt the people you want us to hurt.

Of course they never tell their voters that quite a few of them will be collateral damage.

That's why my go to statement to Retrumplican voters echoes their Supreme leader...go Fuck yourselves

One can be a great business attorney and be a great judge. I know one. But he had years of experience as a lawyer.

A person with 3 years experience becoming a federal district court judge? Ridiculous.
