Top House Republicans open to legislation regulating 'bump stocks'

Top House Republicans said they will consider restricting “bump stocks,” the firearm accessory used to accelerate gunfire in the Las Vegas massacre, opening the door to heightened regulation in response to the tragedy.

Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte (R-Va.) both said Thursday that lawmakers will consider further rules for the devices, which allow legal semiautomatic rifles to fire as rapidly as more heavily restricted automatic weapons.

“Clearly that’s something we need to look into,” Ryan said on MSNBC. He said he was not aware of what “bump stocks” were before Sunday’s shooting, which left at least 58 dead and hundreds injured.

“We’re going to look at the issue,” Goodlatte told The Washington Post. Asked if he had a personal concern about their legality, he said, “I have a personal concern about what happened.”

Even the majority of gun nuts do not care much about these stocks. This would be giving away something they don't care about in exchange for the appearance of caring about gun control. Especially smart move considering there is a good chance the BATFE could reverse their decision and ban them anyways. It is a win-win for them.

until one side or the other embeds language that will further their agenda but which will ultimately make the bill impossible to pass
