SEATTLE (AP) -- A Washington father who raised nearly $100,000 to cover lunch debt at five Washington school districts is expanding his effort with a new campaign to pay off lunch debt at more school districts across the state.
The Seattle Times reports (http://bit.ly/2wuSSny ) Jeff Lew of Beacon Hill is looking to raise at least $600,000 after his initial efforts were successful with $21,000 raised through donations on GoFundMe, and an additional $17,000 through pledges from singer John Legend and TopGolf CEO Erik Anderson. The new campaign launched Friday.
Lew says he and his team have called various school districts throughout the summer to calculate an estimate of school lunch meal debt at Washington schools. Lew says he wants to prevent students from feeling singled out or being bullied for not having lunch money.

(51,567 posts)When I left teaching 4 years ago over 50% of the public schools qualified for free lunch and breakfast (at least in San Diego). Did the fake prez eliminate this too when we were distracted by all of his other BS?

(38,303 posts)Anyone under 18 walking in the door gets free breakfast and lunch, no questions asked.
I see a lot of grandparents having lunch with their grandchildren too, kids whose parents are working or otherwise unavailable. Prices for adults accompanying their children are reasonable and not beyond the reach of senior citizens with limited incomes.
When our kids were in school lunch was free. So many kids at their school qualified for free lunches it wasn't worth accounting for the kids whose parents could pay. I felt a little bit odd about that, but it sure was handy when my frequently absent-minded and distracted kids forgot their lunches.
My spoiled kids would sometimes complain about the quality of the free food but they've never been truly hungry or lived in a home where the cupboards were bare.

(25,586 posts)everyone with a free breakfast, lunch, and an after-school snack for kids who stay late free of charge. Saves time and effort figuring out who does and doesn't qualify for free or reduced-price meals and prevents children from being singled out for their lunch status.

They are slacking off on doing some good with their ill-gotten gains and storing it like Scrooge McDucks.
Wonder if they take a swim in it from time to time like Scrooge did.

(3,289 posts)some such "paradise" where they hide their money from the IRS. A terrible inconvenience, not to mention worries about, (gasp!) then having to pay taxes on it if caught. Throw in miscellaneous attorney fees and shall we say appropriate "gifts' to entities that can help and it is just too expensive.
