University of Texas Removes Confederate Monuments
Source: The Daily Beast
The University of Texas has begun removing four Confederate-era statues from a main area of campus because the monuments represent the subjugation of African Americans. University of Texas President Greg Fenves announced the move late Sunday night, saying the monuments have become symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism. Crews were in place Sunday night to dismantle the statues, and they were expected to be gone by Monday morning. Fenves linked his decision to the horrific displays of hatred at the University of Virginia and in Charlottesville last week, which he said prompted him to reconsider a 2015 initiative to move the controversial statues. Statues of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Confederate Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston, and Confederate Postmaster General John H. Reagan will be moved to a history museum. We do not choose our history, but we choose what we honor and celebrate on our campus, he said.

(13,032 posts)I'm moving her down this Thursday so was very happy to receive email notice from the school prez Fenves re: decision to remove the statues. UT is unabashedly liberal, and that is exactly why my kiddo chose to attend.

(4,079 posts)Most of them live in Austin. My three brothers and I all went to UT, as did both of my parents, several aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandmother.
I've always said...if you have to live in Texas, the only place to live is Austin.
Good luck to your kiddo. UT is a great school--even greater now .

(13,032 posts)it certainly is quite unique compared to the rest of Tx. Houston, San Antonio, Dallas & Ft. Worth - each of these major cities have their own charm and appeal. I prefer Austin for many reasons, the biggest of them being its liberal spirit, low cost of living, the lovely hill country, & warm climate. To heck with the conservatives, the big cities are becoming more & more liberal.
Sounds like being a Longhorn is a long tradition in your family. I myself & all our kids went to Tx schools. Hook 'em!

The University of Texas in Austin joins the growing list of institutions and cities across the country removing statues that honor leaders of the Confederacy.
University president Gregory Fenves announced Sunday night that the school was taking down statues of Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Albert Sidney Johnston, as well as Confederate Postmaster General John Reagan.
The horrific displays of hatred at the University of Virginia and in Charlottesville shocked and saddened the nation. These events make it clear, now more than ever, that Confederate monuments have become symbols of modern white supremacy and neo-Nazism, Fenves wrote in a letter to the UT community.
Crews wasted no time, dismantling the statues early Monday in front of a crowd of a few dozen supporters and protesters.
Fenves, in his letter, noted that the statues were erected during the period of Jim Crow laws and segregation. The statues represent the subjugation of African Americans, he said. That remains true today for white supremacists who use them to symbolize hatred and bigotry.......
