After clashes with white nationalists, U-Va. library employee suffers a stroke

Source: Washington Post

A University of Virginia employee suffered a stroke Tuesday that some of his friends said was linked to an injury he suffered during the violent demonstrations by white nationalists in Charlottesville last week.

Tyler Magill, 46, a well-known musician and DJ for a local radio station who works for the U-Va. library, was with a small group of people who gathered at a statue of Thomas Jefferson on campus Friday night to resist white nationalists who were marching with torches. The marchers, shouting “Jews will not replace us!” surrounded the students and Magill, who had locked arms at the statue. Fights broke out, with punches and torches thrown, and chemical irritants sprayed.

Magill was struck in the neck by a torch, according to several friends.

UVA employee, 46, who chased away Unite the Right leader at press conference in Charlottesville suffered stroke 'after antisemitic gang tore his carotid artery by battering him with torches during a march on his campus'

- Tyler Magill, who works for UVA's library, saw hundreds marching there Friday
- The white supremacists had gathered ahead of Saturday's 'Unite the Right' rally
- Magill said he saw them surrounding 25 students, chanting antisemitic slogans
- He intervened by linking arms with students around a Thomas Jefferson statue
- They were then beaten and hit with pepper spray by the racists, witnesses said
- Magill didn't know he was hurt, and on Sunday intervened in a press conference
- He chased off Jason Kessler, who organized the rally in which a woman died
- But on Tuesday he had a stroke after a blood clot formed in his carotid artery
- Doctors say the artery had been 'dissected' by a blow, causing the clot to form

A University of Virginia employee who was beaten by white supremacists when they invaded the school's campus on Friday may have suffered a stroke due to the violence inflicted upon him.

Tyler Magill, who works for the university's library, said he saw hundreds of people descending on the UVA's Charlottesville campus, wielding torches and chanting antisemitic slogans.

But when he saw them surrounding a group of around 25 students, he knew he had to intervene. 'I've had a life,' he told The Chronicle of Higher Education on Monday. 'But these kids are 20.'

As a result, Magill and the students were savagely beaten by the crowd - resulting in injuries that ultimately led to a stroke on Tuesday, doctors say.

Stoke: On Tuesday Tyler Magill suffered a stroke due to a blood clot. Magill (seen left, rear,
chasing off white supremacist Jason Kessler in Charlotteville on Sunday, and right) works at
the University of Virginia, where he was attacked by racists on Friday
