U.S. asks Iraq Kurds to postpone referendum: Kurdistan Presidency

ERBIL, Iraq (Reuters) - The United States has asked Iraq's Kurds to postpone a referendum on the independence of their autonomous Kurdish region, planned for Sept. 25, the Kurdish presidency said.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson made the request on Friday, during a phone call with the president of Iraq's Kurdistan Regional Government, Massoud Barzani.

The U.S. State Department said in June it was concerned that the referendum will distract from "more urgent priorities" such as the defeat of Islamic State militants.

"On the issue of the postponement of the referendum, the President (Barzani) stated that the people of the Kurdistan Region would expect guarantees and alternatives for their future," said the statement issued by the Kurdish presidency after Tillerson's call, giving no further details on the Kurdish leader's reaction to the U.S. request.

If I were a Kurd, I'd say to Tillerson, "Remember 1991? Fuck off!"

1. They should have seen this coming...

We used the Kurds while they were useful, but will toss them aside as soon as they're not. Iraq won't willingly give up the territory and Turkey will not allow a Kurdish state on it's border as a safe haven for the PKK. Both are allies and the US won't go out on a limb for what's decent and moral, but will opt for the expedient. That's how geopolitics works many times and it stinks.

2. And I'd respond to the Kurds,

"Oh, well. Mosul's Arab now, we helped liberate it and it'll never be Kurdish again. And those Kurdish territories in Syria that we helped you kick ISIS out of. We're going to help Arab groups if you don't play nice. Don't want to play nice, we can help somebody else."
