Chinese president speaks with Trump and urges calm over North Korea

Source: The Guardian

Saturday 12 August 2017 06.35 BST

China’s president, Xi Jinping, has told Donald Trump in a phone call that all sides should avoid rhetoric or action that would worsen tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Chinese state media.

Reports quoted Xi as saying: “At present, the relevant parties must maintain restraint and avoid words and deeds that would exacerbate the tension on the Korean peninsula.”

Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the United States. China is the North’s biggest economic partner and source of aid.

Trump on Friday went further to turn the crisis into a personal battle of wills between him and Kim Jong-un, warning the North Korean leader he would “truly regret” hostile acts against US territory or US allies.

4. We need to hit China hard on trade.

China uses NK to intimidate Asia & the USA. They screw us every way in business by not keeping their word and forcing intellectual property disclosures, and hacking us.

Enough is enough.

China isn't a good partner, they are toxic. Time to spit venom back their way.

7. China still holds much of our debt. They finally have leverage.

"$6.2 trillion or approximately 45% of the debt held by the public was owned by foreign investors, the largest of which were Japan and China at about $1.09 trillion for Japan and $1.06 trillion for China as of December 2016. "

It took our stupid electorate via the 2016 mad media election to hand over the reins of power for the first time since WW2. Russia and China appear to be in control.

9. Exactly right

They'll come out looking like the grownups in the situation, mediating peace between two overgrown petulant children.

When will Trump's stupid supporters realize this was all a dick-waving contest (waged from a golf course no less!), an exercise in empty threats and bluster? The authority of the United States has been gravely undermined this week. It just keeps getting worse and worse.

grown ups to teach him how to behave. This is embarrassing. He needs a guidance counselor.

11. AP: Xi calls for calm after Trump says US is 'locked and loaded'

Xi calls for calm after Trump says US is 'locked and loaded'

By ERIC TALMADGE and JONATHAN LEMIRE
Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping made a plea for cool-headedness over escalating tensions between the U.S. and North Korea in a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday, urging both sides to avoid words or actions that could worsen the situation.

The call came after Trump unleashed a slew of fresh threats against North Korea on Friday, declaring the U.S. military "locked and loaded" and warning North Korean leader Kim Jong Un that he "will regret it fast" if he takes any action against U.S. territories or allies.

Trump has pushed China to pressure North Korea to halt a nuclear weapons program that is nearing the capability of targeting the United States. China is the North's biggest economic partner and source of aid, but says it alone can't compel Pyongyang to end its nuclear and missile programs.

The White House said in a statement that Trump and Xi "agreed North Korea must stop its provocative and escalatory behavior." It also said that the two "reiterated their mutual commitment to denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula."

State-run China Central Television quoted Xi as telling Trump the "relevant parties must maintain restraint and avoid words and deeds that would exacerbate the tension on the Korean Peninsula."

But restraint was not the word of the day on Friday as Trump sent out a cascade of unscripted statements, including what appeared to be another red line - the mere utterance of threats - that would trigger a U.S. attack against North Korea and "big, big trouble" for Kim............................
