What's your favorite song from 1968?

(34,095 posts)he appeared to be suffering. Same with his family. What a long, hard go he had with this.
Thank you Mr. Campbell for your music. I grew up with it and will always remember you.

(128,446 posts)Loved so many of his songs. The one that made me long to visit (and I finally did) was this -
(and yes I need to get to Wichita and Phoenix too... on my list)!
Condolences to the family and your music will live forever.

(26,044 posts)...that song, like so many of his hits, was written by Jimmy Webb, who is, fortunately, still with us.

(27,794 posts)But Glen Campbell really could interpret a song. I love when singers write their own songs, but sometimes there are singer/songwriter combinations that were just meant to be.

(23,295 posts)He and his family struggled with his dementia openly and honestly. I really admire them for that. After losing my dad to early onset Alzheimer's, I followed Glen Campbell's journey closely. He was officially diagnosed in 2011 the same year my dad died.
I almost can't bear to hear this song - but after living it - I know how true these words are. Achingly so. Goodbye and safe home Glen.

(24,259 posts)my heart goes out to all who love him because I too know how incredibly painful it is to watch a loved one fade away from this horrible disease and that he and they faced it so publicly... I can't even imagine... but appreciate the awareness they raised.

Sadly it's all too common a disease and one that we desperately need a cure NOW for. I just wish all of our gov cared more and deeply about providing the funds and encouraging the talented scientists needed to get this vicious beast eradicated as soon as possible.

(5,914 posts)He didn't intend for his version to be formally released as a song. The record company edited out his directions to musicians and released his version of it anyway, which is, of course, perfect.
I seem to recall that the same sort of thing happened with Simon and Garfunkel on Sound of Silence.

"Wichita Lineman" was the one that gave me chills...still does to this day. Raw, honest and unashamed emotion, one of the most amazing readings of any song I've ever heard. He took full ownership of it in the same way that Jimi Hendrix owned "All Along The Watchtower."
R.I.P., Glen.

I know some people do not care for Amazing Grace (there was even a thread about that here on DU quite recently), but I love the melody, especially on bagpipes, so here is Campbell's rendition -

(14,914 posts)I am just glad he lived in the era of recorded music, so that his talent can endure for years to come. You might also enjoy hearing him play bagpipes on Bonaparte's Retreat. It is rare but wonderful to hear the pipes on a country music song, but they were certainly part of the genre's old-country roots. I'd be willing to bet that many of Glen's Campbell ancestors were pipers!

(2,062 posts)He was a fantastic singer. My mother passed from dementia and Alzheimer disease. He really hung in there, amazingly being able to remember songs, playing his guitar, hitting every chord and note, but not remembering his daughter was in his band singing with him.... For those who don't remember, Hartford wrote Campbell's break-out hit, "Gentle On My Mind" and performed it with him many times. He was also a beloved regular most weeks on the Glen Campbell Show.
