Venezuela opposition figures taken from homes

Source: CNN

Caracas, Venezuela (CNN)Leading Venezuelan opposition figures Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma have been taken from their homes, according to tweets from their families.

"They just took Leopoldo from the house. We do not know where he is or where he is being taken. Maduro is responsible if something happens to him," Lopez's wife Lilian Tintori tweeted early Tuesday morning, referring to Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has cracked down on opposition leaders as tensions are once again ratcheted in the Latin American nation.

Maduro's sham "election" for the constituent assembly he wants to use to usurp the opposition-controlled parliament was supposedly "won" with over 8 million votes (more than what Maduro got when he was elected president), but all reputable sources and pollsters observing it gave it no more than 2 million. It was a fraud, and everyone knows it.

Now Maduro and co. are using their "victory" as an excuse to go full-authoritarian, which of course includes taking away the 2 most popular opposition leaders. And FYI, most countries in South America have said they will not recognize the "results" of this election, as well as the US, Canada, and most of Western Europe (so far).

Any Chavista apologists wanna comment on this?

Wonder what it will take for her to stop supporting them? That they put Venezuelans in droves in gas chambers maybe? Sounds a bit extreme, but considering how there's thousands of people already in jail for protesting and hundreds dead at the hands of Maduro's "security" forces, I think that's probably the breaking point for her and the few remaining with similar mindsets.

Court says 2 Venezuela opposition leaders back to prison

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Two of Venezuela’s leading opposition figures were taken from their homes in the middle of the night by state security agents on Tuesday in President Nicolas Maduro’s government’s first moves against prominent enemies since a widely denounced vote granting the ruling party nearly unlimited powers.

The Venezuelan Supreme Court said in a statement that Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma had violated the terms of their house arrest by criticizing the government in messages released on social media in recent days.

The court, which is controlled by Maduro allies, also said that it had received “reports from official intelligence sources” that the two men had been planning to flee.

Relatives and allies of Lopez and former Caracas Mayor Ledezma earlier reported on social media that both had been detained. Lopez’s wife posted what appeared to be video of him being taken from their home after midnight.
