Report: White House Has Met With Potential Flake Primary Challengers

Source: Talking Points Memo

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published JULY 17, 2017 12:08 PM
While Senate Republican leaders work to whip enough votes for their Obamacare repeal bill, the White House and its allies have been meeting with potential primary challengers to one of the GOP caucus’ most vulnerable senators, Jeff Flake of Arizona, according to a Monday report in Politico.

Trump himself has spoken to Jeff DeWit, the Arizona state treasurer and former Trump campaign aide, who is considering a Senate bid, two sources told Politico. White House officials have also talked to former state Sen. Kelli Ward, who challenged Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in his primary last year and has already announced a primary challenge to Flake, and met with potential primary challenger and former Arizona Republican Party Chairman Robert Graham, according to the report.

David Bossie, a former Trump campaign aide who runs Citizens United, told Graham that conservatives were likely to back either him or DeWit in a primary with Flake, three unnamed sources told Politico.

Flake has aired criticism of Trump before, calling on him to drop out of the presidential race after the notorious “Access Hollywood” tape and questioning his decision to fire James Comey as FBI director.

1. Damn, drumpf is no friend to generic R's.

They have to swear fealty to him personally, or they are enemies to be cut out of the pictures. Any R who trusts him is either a fascist like Hair Furor or irredeemably stupid.

2. Flake is the epitome of the principled GOP

when it comes to pork-barrel spending. I remember watching him for years during the budget & appropriations debates when he was in the House, and he was always there pointing out, via a handy list, all the earmarks his colleagues were getting and railing against that.

IMHO, his own party ain't gonna be able to primary him, and unless the Democrats can find a strong candidate to run against him, he'll be returning for another term.

13. They might try

but he has been more low-keyed "mavericky" than his fellow Senator from AZ Mclame but still has more "Raygun) conservative" principles in comparison.

President Donald Trump has talked since the fall of recruiting a Republican to challenge Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake in the 2018 primary.

Story highlights

President Donald Trump and Republican Sen. Jeff Flake have had some issues
White House officials have now talked to three prospective Flake primary challengers

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump and White House officials have had a series of conversations with prospective Republican candidates about challenging Arizona GOP Sen. Jeff Flake in the 2018 primary.

Kelli Ward, who has already launched her campaign, and Robert Graham, a former state GOP chair and Trump adviser who is considering it, both told CNN on Monday they have had multiple conversations with White House officials about opposing Flake in the Senate primary.

Graham said the talks began shortly after the 2016 presidential campaign concluded, and both Graham and Ward said further conversations took place as recently as two weeks ago.

Another potential candidate -- state treasurer Jeff DeWit -- has had multiple conversations with Trump, sources familiar with those talks said. DeWit is close with Graham, making it unlikely both would run.

Trump was furious at Flake last fall when the Arizona senator called on Trump to withdraw from the presidential race after the emergence of the "Access Hollywood" tape.

7. Ah hah

Unsurprisingly, it turns out to be about don the thug attempting to exact revenge after Flake took a principled stand.

Well, unless the Dems run a strong candidate with a good chance to win, I hope he retains his Senate seat, if only to raise the orange abomination's blood pressure even more (you just know, based on his florid complexion and short fuse, that it's already sky high).

Oh, and donnie, don't hesitate to have yet another bucket of KFC. You know that those killjoy doctors who say that large quantities of fat and fried foods are bad for you are just parroting fake news junk science.

8. Does he really have nothing better to do than avenge personal grudges?

On the bright side, he may single handedly destroy the Republican party.
