Former Trump campaign chairman Manafort earned nearly $17m from Ukrainian party

Kiev: Paul Manafort, US President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman, recently filed financial reports with the Justice Department showing that he earned nearly $US17 million ($21.7 million) for two years of work for a Ukrainian political party with links to the Kremlin.

Curiously, that was more than the party itself reported spending in the same period for its entire operation the national political organisation's expenses, salaries and other incidentals.

The discrepancies show a lot about how Manafort's clients former president Viktor Yanukovych of Ukraine and his Party of Regions operated.

And in a broader sense, they underscore the dangers that lurk for foreigners who, tempted by potentially rich payoffs, cast their lot with politicians in countries that at best have different laws about money in politics, and at worst are, like Ukraine in those years, irredeemably corrupt.

1. Does Ukraine have money to blow?

How is one man worth that kind of salary? He is a traitor. I don't know how people can command those kinds of money making deals when there are so many who do without. Greed has no boundaries. Lock him up.

2. No.

Then again countries, organizations and people do what they want not what they need.

The political party was, of course, corrupt. Moreover, it probably had a lot of money funneled from Russia--not to help Manafort, but to help Yanukovich. Much of it probably went towards Yanukovich's very nice house. And his zoo.

It's unclear if he made it personally or if it was paid to his firm and then passed on to his employees. The article seems to suggest the former, but only "suggest": To say that he was paid this amount but most of it didn't go to him would undermine the article itself, so it's best for the reporter to leave it ambiguous and allow the reader to draw his or her own conclusion. Then if it's wrong, it's not the reporter's responsibility; and if it's true, then the reporter claims credit.

In political reporting, precision is your foe.
