Study finds Oklahoma leads US with higher education cuts

Source: Associated Press

Updated 3:40 pm, Friday, July 14, 2017

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A recent study says Oklahoma is leading the U.S. in higher education cuts over the last five years.

The study conducted by Illinois State University shows that Oklahoma's appropriations for education have decreased since 2012 by nearly 18 percent.

The Illinois State University study found that appropriations for Louisiana, West Virginia, Alaska, Kentucky, Arkansas and Kansas have also decreased over the last five years

Oklahoma universities and colleges have increased tuition, cut programs, faculty and staff in an effort to make up for those cuts, the Tulsa World (http://bit.ly/2uZULVH ) reported.

anyway across the Bible Belt, where passion for learning is considered dangerous. It rises to a cult in our Georgia city.

OU has been reportedly far less impacted by the budget cuts because of other sources of income, including from its Sooners of course. The cuts hit smaller and rural institutions much harder.

"For fiscal year 2018, which begins July 1, state funding for Rogers State University is expected to be one-third less than in 2009, and the lowest since 2001. Employees have been told to expect 12 to 18 furlough days for which they will not be paid, and professors may have to teach extra course sections in the fall." But no extra pay, of course.

From 2016, this is probably typical. No mention of slashing competitive sports to shift resources to education: "Union High School, one of the state’s largest schools, has 1,700 students participating in some form of athletics. Finding ways to trim the budget, without impacting the most popular programs, is becoming more difficult with each mandate from the Oklahoma State Capital. “Cuts are happening everywhere and to every program. Nothing is immune. I know we’re working with our booster clubs to maybe help make up some of the difference."

Aims to transform America into a third world country. They hate science, infrastructure and they really hate education...

Education teaches people to think and consider the stuff republicans value as backwards.

Would have loved to stay, but it wasn't in the cards. Guess it was a blessing in disguise.

attend College to be able to. If that happened who would work at the full service car wash, wait on them at the restaurant and shine their shoes?

But...the way Brownback has nearly bankrupted Kansas I can't believe we're not #1 in cuts. Him and the Republicans that run the Legislature have GUTTED everything else they could get their hands on that would help regular people to pay for a ZERO % tax rate on Corporations since 2013.
