Education Dept. Civil Rights Head: 90% of Campus Sexual Assaults Amount to 'We Were Both Drunk'

Source: Time

A Department of Education official said "90%" of sexual assault accusations on college campuses "fall into the category of 'we were both drunk,'" speaking out in an interview as Education Secretary Betsy DeVos prepares to meet Thursday with a range of advocacy groups to discuss the issue.

Candice Jackson, who leads the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights, told the New York Times that for most sexual assault investigations, there's "not even an accusation that these accused students overrode the will of a young woman."

"Rather, the accusations — 90% of them — fall into the category of ‘we were both drunk,’ ‘we broke up, and six months later I found myself under a Title IX investigation because she just decided that our last sleeping together was not quite right,'" she said.

The comment alarmed some advocates for sexual assault victims, including Jess Davidson, the managing director of the group End Rape on Campus.

Is there $ to be saved somewhere? Is there a cabal of rich assholes who want to rape with impunity? Are we preparing for a new US reality that amounts to some version of "The Handmaid's Tale"?

What is the benefit here? Or are they really just interested in making the world a horrible place for everyone who's not rich, male and white?

Or all four, including your second paragraph.

If an acquittal judgement such as "I don't want to put you in prison because you're such a great swimmer, and I don't want to ruin your college experience" is anything to go by, rape with impunity is the goal here.

And a lot of them seem to be worried that maybe they'll be accused of it? One of the reasons conservatives claim that young conservative males shouldn't bother going to college is that the liberal feminists will accuse them of rape and ruin their lives.

sift through the "he said/she said", and rape cases are always PR nightmares that the school can't ever make right -- Either punishment was too light, they let the smug rapist off the hook, or on the rare occasions, they only find out much later that accusation was fabricated out of some petty revenge

Sure there is variability as to motive, intent, regret, revenge, unrequited love ... mixed with youthful ignorance, drugs, alcohol,
medications, stress .... just about anything can happen in human endeavors, but throwing out lump sums like that without
statistical data to back them up is just ideological nonsense. Alcohol is not an excuse, and victims are still victims.

Consent should be taught, perhaps even documentation.

Can any of those things she said actually happen? yes.

Can they be lumped together into this one broad statement? No, I doubt it very much. 90% of anything
should raise alarms.

Like much of what the administration is doing, I think this is ideologically driven for some specific agenda.

We just saw this week that more than 50% of republican voters think college is bad for the country. This is reflective of that mindset.

And, by the way, while i concur about the absence of statistically supported data, i think it extraordinarily likely, absent that same data to contradict, that her 90% is a preposterous exaggeration. And clearly, the notion of "no means no" or that an incapacitated "partner" can't consent is completely lost on this cretin.

Women get blamed for rape if they had a drink. Men get excused from rape because they had a drink. See, rape is all the woman's fault.

Let people choose to go off campus to drink/smoke & that will be a civil matter for the city police.

we still had rape. We even had same gender rape. We also had emergency call buttons in each room.

Sometimes people rape each other. But I get what you're saying about the city police might be more helpful than campus security.
