Russia vows to treat US jets in Syria as 'targets' after America guns down first regime warplane
Source: The Independent
Russia has said it will treat US warplanes operating in parts of Syria where its air forces are present as "targets" amid a diplomatic row caused by the downing of a Syrian jet. The country's defence ministry said the change in position would apply to all aircraft operating as part of the US-backed coalition west of the Euphrates River. It will also suspend a hotline between Russia and the US set up to prevent mid-air collisions. ... The US did not use its communication channel with Russia ahead of the downing of the Syrian government warplane, the ministry was quoted as saying, accusing the US of a "deliberate failure to make good on its commitments" under the de-confliction deal. 1. U.S.-backed SDF will retaliate if Syrian government attacks again - spokesman
---snip---
U.S.-backed Syrian militias accused the Syrian government on Monday of bombing their positions southwest of Raqqa city in recent days and threatened to retaliate if the attacks continue. "The regime's forces have mounted large-scale attacks using planes, artillery, and tanks since June 17," Syrian Democratic Forces spokesman Talal Selo said in a statement. Selo said the attacks targeted SDF areas near the town of Tabqa and the adjacent dam, Syria's largest, which the alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias captured from Islamic State militants in May. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian army. http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideast-crisis-syria-sdf-idUKKBN19A166 ---snip--- |

4. As per the Korean War and Vietnam that was not always the case.
Russia has a long history of such actions given the rebranding the same old actors are in play.

8. If they had a Russian in a Syrian marked jet with Syrian transponders
They shouldn't be surprised at what happened. This happened in Vietnam also, with Russians and the Chinese flying North Nietnamese flagged jets.
As far as I know, both Russia, China and the US pretended their pilots weren't there and proceeded like nothing happened other than us shooting down a NV aircraft. |

Then it'll be Trump's move. Which is when it'll really hit the proverbial fan. Because no matter what he does, I'm sure it will be the most tone-deaf, counterproductive choice available. |

It just can't be that Russia wouldn't have our best interests at heart.

11. Why even bother with Syria at this point?
it's not worth it. The US should just withdraw and let the rest of them deal with it.
The US is eyeballs deep in Iraq of course thanks to W's brilliance, so we that's where we should limit our involvement. |

This, more than the Syrian civil war is why we are there. I assume if not for ISIS Obama would have left even with Assad's war crimes.

The US does not want a permanent Iranian military presence in Syria. That is is the explosive situation we are trying to prevent.

13. Not sure where that came from.
Given all the "Trump is in the Russians' pocket" posts.
At the same time, this was in response to bombs falling on US troops or allies. Reportedly it's not the first time. I have serious trouble considering somebody dropping bombs on me to be neutral, much less a friend. What would you call it? Notice that one of the steps Russia is implementing is terminating the communications process to make sure that Russia/Syria and US/FSA (or whatever it is) don't shoot at each other's planes or drop bombs on each other. So they're terminating something that apparently either isn't reliable or that the other side is ignoring. Meh. |

15. A Compromise?
Maybe Putin will decide to move on the Middle East first then Europe. Then Trump will decide to show the American People he really wanted peace by giving in to Putin rather than starting a war (see America, I told you I wouldn't get into war) by signing over Europe (to Russia) much as his idol did with the Sudetenland by waving a document and decying "Peace in Our Time" - nudge nudge wink wink "Vlad old buddy. And thanks again," DJT.
