UK weather: Britain basks in record-breaking June temperatures - and it's getting hotter

Britain has basked in the hottest day of the year so far, with temperatures expected to soar as the heatwave continues into next week.

The mercury peaked at 30.2C (86.36F) in Teddington, while clear skies and strong sunshine were also enjoyed by the majority of Britons on Saturday.

Temperatures are set to again soar to at least 30C (86F) in the South and South East on Sunday - meaning that Britain will be hotter than Thailand, making it the hottest June 18 since records began 167 years ago.

The mercury is expected to continue rising into the low 30s into early next week.

As longtime duer hatrack mused, tongue firmly planted in cheek, "If only there were some sort of over-arching theory that could explain all these unusual weather events we've been seeing for lo these many years . . . . "

3. Crowded beaches like that are exactly why we always leave Europe for our summer vacation

JFK made the ocean side of the outer part of Cape Cod a national park. No mass parking lots, no commercial renting of permanent beach chairs, and no fast food stands in the beach. It's a 4000 mile trip from here, but it's worth it.

7. If what makes the Cape so attractive to us is destroyed, we'll just go elsewhere

But few developers would try, once they get their architects to check the place out.

The Outer Cape is so fragile ecologically, building a hotel on the dunes of the National Seashore of the Outer Cape would be losing proposition. They shift dramatically from one year to the next. They are so fragile and unstable, any hotel built on them would sink into the sea within two years or less. There are signs at many of the beaches of the National Seashore that say to only use designated pathways from the beach to the top of the dunes because they are so fragile they can collapse by just having your kid run down them. One family even lost a child because they let their kid run up and down the dune on one of the beaches, and it collapsed and killed the kid. A few years ago, Massachusetts had to spend millions just to move the landmark Truro Lighthouse back a few yards because it was about to fall into the ocean. Trump may know all about bribing locals to get a building permit that never should be issued, and maybe he can even disband the National Park Service, but even Trump can't bribe Mother Nature.

5. We lived there 1977-78.

We enjoyed approx. 3 weeks of warm weather -- in May. The locals said that was "the usual". Yep, I'm quite sure there really, truly IS an over-arching theory....
BTW, my first post to DU -- hailing from the GWN (Great White North). Been reading for a few years now, and happy to join up with fellow liberals/progressives.
