GOP rep. pushes gun reciprocity for lawmakers after Alexandria shooting

Source: The Hill

June 14, 2017 - 03:41 PM EDT

Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) said Wednesday that Congress should consider firearm reciprocity to make it easier for lawmakers to carry guns in Washington, D.C., following an attack on a congressional baseball practice that left Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) in critical condition.

Loudermilk was one of the lawmakers on the field when a gunman, identified as James Hodgkinson, began firing shots at them.

Virginia offers concealed-carry permits and allows citizens to carry firearms openly without a license. But Washington's tighter gun laws makes it more difficult for lawmakers to carry guns.

1. Great idea.

If they are as inept at shooting as they are at governing, we will not need elections!! They will solve our problems for us. Clean house, then we can get some REAL representatives in their places.

2. Of course... the answer to gun violence, as ever it is, is even more guns.

These Republicans are, collectively, a one-trick pony.

3. Yes, I always pack heat when playing second base.

Heck, my league doesn't allow anyone on the field to have ANY metal, whether chains, necklaces, earrings that dangle, etc.

10. If Zell Miller could have brought his dueling pistols into the Congress...

We might have been subject to a lot more House special elections over the years, just saying. And I'd sure as hell be nervous about Gianforte when he takes his seat.
Some of those people in congress have a very odd sense of what is appropriate and what isn't. And a good number of them have anger issues.

7. Steve Scalise had three armed security with him and he STILL got shot, as did 2 of his security team

WTF is with this cowboy mentality that more guns will fix the problem?
It's so crazy, they don't use this rationale on anything else: It's like saying:

"Hey there's an opioid epidemic, let's have doctors hand out heroin on streetcorners!"
"Hey, my house keeps getting broken into, let's leave the doors unlocked, surely that will help!"
"Half of the country is obese--so of course, free McDonalds for everyone!!"

Some average guy pulling out a pistol would only make him a more noticeable target.

is taking his/her life in his/her hands. Recently a plain clothes police officer was shot to death by a fellow officer during an active shooter attack on a police station.

13. Stupid!

Yeah, how many people would have been killed if those clueless quick draw Repugs had had guns, you can bet there would be quite a few more dead folks. Guns do nothing but kill, they don't protect unless the person with the gun is very skilled and the other one with a gun isn't. Many women find their own guns are taken from them and used against them.

They're not only fortunate Scalise's security detail was there, they're fortunate the security detail had very good aim.

18. Having a gun without extensive law officer level training only makes you a bigger target.

If a guy with assault rifles sees someone pull out a gun, guess who he's going to shoot first?
There were two security officers who were caught in an extensive shootout with one officer being hit. And these were professionsls specifically trained to handle this kind of situation.

How would if have worked out if one Congressman pulled out a pistol?
We'd almost certainly have a dead Congressman lying on the ground with a gun in his hand.

Guns in the hands of the untrained would only make these situations worse.

22. This is exactly right

Years ago, I was watching a program on the local PBS channel with a retired cop talking about how to protect yourself. The thing that's stuck with me through the years was him saying that if you have a gun and point it at a perp, you better be ready to kill him (or her) because you can be sure they are ready and able to kill you. He said most people can't bring themselves to shoot to kill, so, essentially, it's unwise to carry a gun for the purpose of "protecting yourself".

I will just also note that one staffer reportedly was hunkered down in his car. His boss said the staffer usually has a 9mm in the car, but he didn't have it and so was unable to do anything. Well, that is he could have started his car and driven it toward the shooter or used it to try and block the gunfire. But he didn't do anything, which makes me think he'd have been too scared to actually get off a good shot.

29. It's a good idea

Under very strict conditions

1. 16 hour course on gun safety and the proper storage and cleaning of a gun
2. 16 hour weapon familiarization course, for the type of weapon you are seeking a permit for.
3. 8 hour range exercise followed by a qualification test, in which the firer must score 20 out of 40.
The targets to be at different distances, much the same way as it's done in the military.
4. A live fire exercise course, where they will be required to determine the bad guys from civilians, they must
get 10 out of 10.

Once they've accomplished all of this, they will receive a temporary permit, good for 90 days. After the 90 days they will receive a permanent permit good for the time that they are in office.

Last but not least they will have to renew if reelected, having to meet all of the same standards!

31. Aren't Republicans the party that told students to throw things and charge at an active shooter.

Reality doesn't seem to favor right-wing fantasies about how he-man Republicans would react in a crisis.
