U.S. believes ISIS' bomb-making research includes new generation of explosives

Source: CBS News

Amid the bombed-out ruins of Mosul University, U.S. officials say they have uncovered evidence that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) was developing a new type of bomb that could pass through an airport scanner undetected.

CBS News joined Iraqi Special Forces in Mosul just days after the hard-fought battle to recapture the University in January. It's long been believed that Mosul University was the center of the militants' bomb-making projects, using the school's equipment and labs.

Now, U.S. officials believe that research includes a new generation of more powerful explosives that could be concealed in a computer.

When ISIS overran Mosul in 2014, they also captured the city's international airport. And with it, all the modern security scanner and screening equipment necessary to test their new bombs.

3. That doesn't follow.

Unless you think that Russia shares such intelligence with ISIS. After the "leak" Russia, Israel, and the US knew, plus whoever else Israel shared the info with.

A couple of days later it was in the NYT, but that was neither Putin's, Trump's, nor Netanyahu's doing.

The leak of classified information to the US media was done by the guy we like and support.

2. Trump wants to declare martial law so badly

he'll create an incident so he can. I think his leak is part of a plan and probably was suggested by Putin. So here's something we had a chance to stop at the point of manufacture and maybe stop transport. Now, who knows?

4. So they found this stuff in a university we bombed to smithereens?

And it hadn't blown up? And they figured out how to make it from the security equipment at the local airport?

Is it just me or does this story have more holes that Spongebob Squarepants?

5. Probably isn't the whole story in the article

But sounds like they were using the universities lab to develop new explosives. Then testing to see if it could make it through security with the equipment from the airport. As to why it didn't cause a major explosion. Only thing I can think of is this was just a research deal. Trying to get a formula they could pass on to bomb makers world wide. There may not have been much finished product there.

6. This is depressing

Let's hope they don't get the opportunity to use that technology.
