Chaffetz: 'I Question' Whether Comey Memos Are 'Actually There'

Source: Talking Points Memo

By MATT SHUHAM Published MAY 18, 2017 10:30 AM

Two days after threatening to use his “subpoena pen” to get his hands on James Comey’s reported memos describing his encounters with President Donald Trump, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) on Thursday expressed skepticism as to whether they actually existed.

Chaffetz — in addition to many other members of Congress on both sides of the aisle — has called on Comey to testify in a public setting and provide his memos to Congress. He serves as the powerful chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. This came on the heels of a New York Times report, based on one of the fired FBI director’s memos, that Trump had attempted to suppress the FBI’s investigation of ousted National Security Adviser Michael Flynn in February.

“I do think in the light of day in a public setting he should be able to tell us about not only the materials, if they’re there, and I question whether or not they’re actually there, but if they’re there, and then how did he take them?” Chaffetz told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“Why do you question that?” Stephanopoulos asked. “Well, nobody’s seen them,” Chaffetz said. “Even the reporter that did the story hasn’t seen them. Nobody I know of, even the reporter, has not [sic] actually seen these documents.”

And "when did he make them" duh, you make notes right after a meeting while the points are fresh in your mind.

Lawrence O'Donnell specifically explained the term for it is "memcon" - a formal document MEMorializing a CONnversation.

for a new administration. He thought initially that the whole thing was going to explode right away so he acted to save his skin. Seeing that the wreck is indeed happening but at a slower pace, he cannot help but jockey for power. That's what he does for a living.

In the FBI so they could remember the conversation later. From the Lawrence O'Donnell explanation, it sounds like they might have been officially date-stamped and filed, like the minutes of a meeting.

I remember a lot of things by emailing myself so it's backed up and I can find it later.

Yeah, I get it. If you're in an hour-long meeting you take notes during. In this case, he's documenting an unscheduled conversation where he probably didn't start with a legal pad in his hand when it happened.

Then, anything that arises to show that the memos are legit - even if that admission is made by Chaffetz himself - will be labeled as disinformation coming from the"deep state."
