2017 Tony Awards: Great Comet Leads With 12 Nominations
Source: New York Times
Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812, an offbeat pop opera based on a slice of Tolstoys War and Peace, earned 12 Tony nominations Tuesday morning, more than any other show, capping a remarkable journey from an 87-seat Off Broadway theater to New Yorks biggest stage. Josh Groban, the recording star who is making an acclaimed Broadway debut in the show, was among those nominated.
An old-fashioned, crowd-pleasing revival of Hello, Dolly! scored 10 nominations, including for its stars, Bette Midler and David Hyde Pierce.
The most coveted prize for best new musical will be determined through a showdown between the heartwrenching Dear Evan Hansen and the uplifting Come From Away, as well as The Great Comet and Groundhog Day, an adaptation of the Bill Murray film.
Four American writers, each making a Broadway debut, will vie for the best play prize. They are Lucas Hnath, for A Dolls House, Part 2; Lynn Nottage for Sweat; J.T. Rogers for Oslo; and Paula Vogel for Indecent. Ms. Nottage and Ms. Vogel are both Pulitzer Prize winners arriving on Broadway after years of success Off Broadway and at regional theaters.

(23,340 posts)I was reading all the blurbs for "The Great Comet" which is in the theater next to the Richard Rodgers Theater. They weren't having a Saturday matinee, though.

We also saw Cate Blanchett in The Present. We will see Sally Field in The Glass Menagerie in a few weeks.
It's always fun to have seen shows/actors that are nominated for Tony Awards.
You couldn't touch a ticket to see Bette Midler for less than about $500--in the balcony! Too rich for me!
