Exorbitant recruitment fees. Employers that seized workers passports. Workers packed into cramped housing. These were just some of the conditions workers endured in Malaysias electronics industry, according to a 2014 report commissioned by the U.S. government.
The study by Verité, an international research organization in Amherst, Massachusetts, relied on a $450,000 grant from the Labor Departments Bureau of International Labor Affairs, which combats child and forced labor overseas.
The preliminary budget of President Donald Trumps administration would eliminate $60 million in grants from the bureaus budget, calling them largely noncompetitive and unproven. It suggested that the agency instead focus its efforts on ensuring that U.S. trade agreements are fair for American workers.
The cuts would hobble one of the countrys key methods for combatting child and forced labor around the globe, and potentially limit the federal governments ability to help countries comply with labor provisions in 13 free trade agreements. In addition, the cuts could effectively do the opposite of what Trump intends by forcing U.S. companies to increasingly compete with overseas companies that flout worker safeguards and pay meager wages.

(11 posts)Of course he wants to defund the programs that would make him comply to child labor laws for his own, and daughter dearests businesses operating all over the world EXCEPT here in the good ole USofA. Him and his daughter are just as guilty as anyone for the practices of abusing those workers, and destroy their rights. This man and his family have no scruples about his overuse of authority and belief that he is above the law.

Best to just get rid of the program that might make the discovery.
"Tough luck for them" if children are forced into labor camps in Asia, eh Donnie Boy? As long as they're cranking out "Ivanka" brand baubles or "Drumpf" brand ties, and the cash is flowing, who gives a crap, right?
"In addition, the cuts could effectively do the opposite of what Drumpf intends by forcing U.S. companies to increasingly compete with overseas companies that flout worker safeguards and pay meager wages."
How naive ARE the media, seriously? These 'effects' are the EXACT INTENTION of the cuts to the Bureau. Well, along with it helping his bottom-line as mentioned above ...
Oh, and also desperately throwing red meat to his dwindling 'base' as 100 days approaches and he's accomplished zilch other than undermining our system of government, our democracy and pissing off 'the left' at every possible turn.
