Donald Trump says US will act alone on North Korea if China fails to help
Source: The Guardian
The US is prepared to respond to North Korean nuclear threats on its own if China fails to pressure Pyongyang, Donald Trump said in an interview with the Financial Times published on Sunday. “Well, if China is not going to solve North Korea, we will,” the president said. “That is all I am telling you.” Trump will host the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, this Thursday and Friday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, where the two leaders are expected to discuss North Korea, China’s ambitions in the South China Sea and trade. Trump said he had “great respect” for Xi and “great respect for China”, adding: “I would not be at all surprised if we did something that would be very dramatic and good for both countries and I hope so.” About North Korea, he said: “China has great influence over North Korea. And China will either decide to help us with North Korea, or they won’t. And if they do that will be very good for China, and if they don’t it won’t be good for anyone.” Asked what might motivate China to help, Trump said: “I think trade is the incentive. It is all about trade.” Trump’s deputy national security adviser, KT McFarland, told the FT there was a “real possibility” North Korea could be capable of hitting the US with a nuclear-armed missile by the end of Trump’s first term. 1. Of course it's not all about trade. It's also about 25 million...
starving North Korean refugees bursting over the border into China. China has been playing a very delicate game there, and their insane little neighbor is getting on their nerves, too. But, what to do about it now?
And do the South Koreans have a say in another war? With their capital just miles from the border? I remember the Cuban Missile Crisis and how we almost blew that. This could be worse. |

2. It's too bad we don't have any real diplomats
Tillerson threw his hands up after his meeting. Now we must rely on China to negotiate, and that puts them in a very powerful position. Them being in a powerful position is not what tRump likes. Can he control himself, or will he just nuke 'em?

3. We can't act alone without China's blessing.
As an ally, China might be obligated to come to NK's assistance if we take action.

No sane person would unleash the human misery an overt military action against N. Korea would create.

The closest reinforcements are the Marines stationed at Okinawa, followed by an army division stationed in Hawaii.

20. Trump's continued diplomatic failures have created a vacuum
It will not be filled by Field Marshall Trump playing army. It will be filled by Russia, China, and the EU all using their diplomatic chops to stabilize the world. In the end - America will lose economically and socially because that tin pot dictator in the White House has no idea what he is playing at.

24. We have an administration that thinks diplomacy is worthless, so
all that is left is aggressive actions. China has to make a decision for the region is to how much they want to back an ally knowing that NK in this world right now doesn't offer them much. They are the world leader in business and a country with an enormous army. Stability in the region is all they want and need. I doubt they would just sit back and allow the US an attack on NK.
