Trump's border wall hinges on legal team devoted to eminent domain; Texans wary

WASHINGTON -- The administration made no effort Thursday to explain how it will get Mexico to pay for a border wall, as the White House rolled out a budget that calls for a new squadron of lawyers focused on wresting land from border residents in Texas and other states.

A sea-to-sea barrier of the sort promised by President Donald Trump would require control of land in a narrow strip along 2,000 miles. Not all landowners would be willing to sell. That means the project could require widespread use of "eminent domain" -- the power to force owners to sell land for a public purpose.

"You're taking land that in some cases belonged to people for generations. In Texas, private property rights is a very, very important concept," said Rep. Henry Cuellar, a Laredo Democrat.

The president is asking Congress for $4.1 billion through next year to begin construction of a wall, a barrier projected to cost as much as $25 billion, plus annual repairs.

1. Is it wrong . . .

of me to hope that the majority of the landowners are people who voted for Trump?

2. Not at all.

I don't want the wall to actually be built. But until its ultimate defeat, I'm perfectly happy for Trumpsters to suffer the most awful inconvenience and stress.

6. If you look at the election map, majority living near the border with Mexico didn't vote for Trump.

5. Eminent Domain bogeyman

Eminent domain is one of the bogeymen of the far right whackjobs.

It is just another heinous socialist, commie plot to take their property and freedoms.

Kind of like taking a conservatives slaves back in the day.

Though to be fair like any government power it can be abused.

The real question is what wins out with the wingers along the border, their bigotry or their hatred of the "feds".

You have to remember that this is the mindset that thought bringing electricity to rural America was a vile plot.

7. I know Texans. Hell, I'm one myself. Those land owners

that don't want TrumpFence will initiate gun battles with the installers, cut its wires, oxy-torch the metal panels and posts, and if necessary, dynamite it. They like Mexicans much more than a NYC shit ass telling them what to do with their land.

15. Does rump actually know anything about Texans?

He doesn't even understand the people in his own city. He says they love him. Yet they voted against him in overwhelming numbers.

12. Big Fat Zero

None

No way

No How

GTF off my property M-F.....

Hell, right now I am fighting TxDoT's attempt to take additional land from me --
just on principal ...
(they have not yet utilized the existing 30' RoW between my property line and the highway.. so I do not see why they need to take more at this point)

But by comparison, TxDoT's justification is quite noble....
as they are "improving" an existing highway.....

So try telling Texas folks (especially along the Rio Grande) that you are taking (regardless of $) their land
Just so you can say you kept your campaign promise to build a Wall ...:
And as a bonus, you are freeing them of their view & access to the river etc

11. And/or

Can the landowners just tie this monstrosity up via lawsuits? For, say, 3 yrs 10 months?

At which point the "wall" will vanish like Cinderella's carriage.
