The Kansas House on Thursday approved a bill raising taxes to plug state budget holes over the objection of Republican Governor Sam Brownback.

The governor on Wednesday blasted the measure, which passed the House in a 76-48 vote, claiming it would “pummel the pocketbook of middle-class families.”

The legislation would raise individual income tax rates and end a business tax exemption, raising revenue by an estimated $590 million in fiscal 2018, according to a legislative analysis.

Tax cuts passed by the Republican-controlled legislature since 2012 have punched holes in the state’s budgets as revenue failed to meet targets for months. S&P this month revised the outlook on Kansas’ AA-minus credit rating to negative from stable citing structural budget pressures.

1. So his "experiment" or "laboratory" didn't work so well, eh?

He was going to demonstrate how tax cuts spurred revenue growth. Guess what, these didn't.

And other states have built up surpluses.

2. You mean ...?

The Kansas House on Thursday approved a bill raising taxes to plug state budget holes over the objection of Republican Governor Sam "No, I swear, REALLY, this insane no-Biz-tax scheme will really, really, work" Brownback.

3. What happened?

I've been following the Kansas/Brownback catastrophe, what caused the legislators to change? Not the legislative part. Trickle does not work? My my!

4. The laffer curve is precisely that...

...a f'ing joke.

Of course, being Repubs, they probably raised rates on the bottom brackets and didn't touch the top ones.

6. another Repug FAIL

and since the grade school dropouts who vote for them don't know what a life plan is, continue to vote against their own best interests. Because they don't even know what their best interests might be.

8. He's going to be speaking at CPAC

Along with my idiot inherited multimillionaire governor who is trying to do the same thing to my state that Brownback did in Kansas. Tax cuts for the 1% and budget cuts for government services.

Peace

14. I'm amazed

I'm amazed the KS legislature did this, and by a large margin. Maybe they finally wised up. As a Missourian, I've watched this Kansas dumpster fire very closely. Maybe the citizens finally spoke up. Unfortunately, Missouri is now headed toward the Kansas-like dumpster fire.

15. What's the matter with Kansas?

Great book.

Scewing the state and the people and somehow blaming it on Democrats. And they believe it.

16. if they had done this last year I might not have gotten moved to a different school and gotten sick

it is a direct result of brownstain and his horrible policies that our district had to close 3 schools and consolidate a lot of programs and gutted mine in the process
