CVS Now Selling Generic Competitor To EpiPen At A 6th Of The Price
Source: CBS Boston
WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) CVS is now selling a rival, generic version of Mylans EpiPen at about a sixth of its price, just months after the maker of the life-saving allergy treatment was eviscerated before Congress because of its soaring cost to consumers.
The drugstore chain says it will charge $109.99 for a two-pack of the authorized generic version of Adrenaclick, a lesser-known treatment compared to EpiPen, which can cost more than $600.
CVS Health Corp., the nations second-largest drugstore chain, says it cut the price of the generic version of Adrenaclick nearly in half. The lower price is now available at all CVS stores. The chain runs about 9,600 retail pharmacies in the United States, including several locations inside Target stores.

(2,992 posts)There are a couple of other pharmacies that are either closer to where I live or require fewer left turns into traffic, but I decided to stick with CVS because of this.
i moved to them when my grocery store pharmacy closed.
i often go to walgreens for beer and smokes. i am trying to quit, and when i am trying i am glad i have the cvs there for the other things i might want to get at walgreens.
and the prices are lower, to boot. their store brands are a great deal. and they are more focused on traditional pharmacy stuff, not the cheap chinese crap that is always front and center at the big w.
i also do this at my own inconvenience. walgreens has a drive through much closer, and a 24 hr right across the street from this newer cvs.

(7,524 posts)Good on them for putting this life-saving equipment within reach of normal people.
Since the mechanism isn't much more complicated than a ballpoint pen, and adrenaline is $5/dose, marking up for sterile handling should put this at no more than $25-$30, a dose, but I am glad they did this, and hope nobody buys the Mylan version.

(58,785 posts)not the adrenaline. Still the simplest out there. AdrenaClick's fine but slightly more complicated to use, a concern if the person administering in an emergency has not been trained.
But we got AdrenaClick instead of refilling with EpiPen (as said, fuck EpiPen), and good for CVA.

(12,157 posts)I don't believe the generic pen can be substituted by the pharmacist if the prescription is for EpiPen. The drug itself, epinephrine is extremely cheap it is the delivery device that they are charging so much money for. And the device must be specified. I think the pharmacist and/or doctor is suppose to instruct the use of the new device.

(12,157 posts)Your override is only for drugs. The rules are different for devices. I know it doesn't make sense but that's the way it is.
snip:
Ask Your Doctor for an Epinephrine Auto-Injector Prescription
In most states, to get the low-cost, EpiPen alternative, you can't use a prescription for "EpiPen" from your doctor. That's because pharmacists at your drugstore likely won't be able to automatically substitute the low-cost version if your prescription is written for EpiPen. Instead, ask your doctor to write a prescription for an "epinephrine auto-injector" or "generic Adrenaclick."

(60,010 posts)We use a online discount program, save around 80% from the usual cost,
and the Adrenaclick 2 pack ( of 0.15 mg) is "normally" $450.00 at Walgreens, but $193.00 for the discount rate.
Bear in mind Adrenaclick comes in 2 sizes: 0.15 mg and 0.30 mg.
