Fiat Chrysler to build 3 new Jeeps, create 2,000 jobs in US

Source: AP

DETROIT (AP) -- Fiat Chrysler will add three new Jeeps to its lineup including a pickup truck as it invests $1 billion in two U.S. factories, furthering its effort to increase production of hot-selling SUVs and pickup trucks and get out of producing small and midsize cars. The expansion will create 2,000 new jobs.

The Italian-American automaker said Sunday it will modernize a factory in the Detroit suburb of Warren, Michigan, to make the new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer large SUVs. A factory complex just south of there in Toledo, Ohio, also will get new equipment to make the new pickup. The company wouldn't provide details of the new products, but said the factory work would be done in 2020.

Consumers worldwide have gravitated toward SUVs and trucks while turning away from passenger cars. Last year in the U.S., car sales fell 7 percent while truck and SUV sales rose 8 percent.

Producing vehicles in Mexico and shipping them to the U.S. has become a thorny political issue with the election of Donald Trump as president. Trump has criticized Ford, General Motors and Toyota for building small cars in Mexico and shipping them across the border. He has threatened to impose a big border tax on the companies

The fact that, under Obama, new auto sales have risen by 75% had nothing to do with this, I'm sure.

are so overlooked and credit taken away from the President is mind boggiling. Considering he saved the auto companies from themselves and help the auto industry begin to sell cars again will be pushed aside and forgotten.

It makes me so sad that he will never be acknowledged for what he has done. He saved America from the horrible things from the Bush Admin. and he will be vilified for being black.

This country dissapoints me so much.

Fascists around the world have long understood that, and in recent years neo-fascists have used it to win a number of close elections with otherwise unelectable candidates.

Rajoy's surprise reelection in Spain, Macri's narrow runoff win in Argentina, Turnbull's squeaker in Australia (to some extent), Le Pen in France this May in all likelihood, and of course Trump, are but a few recent examples of candidates that won by a hair largely thanks to dog-whistle politics.

And in the case of Trump, Russian vote hacking - but that's a different story.

Comes out of the same factory as the larger Fiat 500L. Same platform, shit, same orange paint. This isn't the 70's anymore.

*Well, *I* don't have it, my wife does. I have a shitbox 2002 Focus with a quarter million miles on it, but I'm tasked with maintaining our vehicles, so I'm happy she has something reliable for her job; which sometimes involves driving through shitty conditions.

Also I should be driving something more efficient anyway. I intend to keep my badly worn focus alive just long enough for a economical electric car to come online, that has the range I need. That, or the east side light rail option that's supposed to break ground next year.

Every job created is because of Trump. Every job lost is because of immigrants, Democrats, or someone else.

And there will be much lost when they cut Obamacare and other programs.

Just an example, but the article does say that Chrysler-Fiat is reducing its small car production. That means jobs lost.

Companies will quietly cut jobs a couple hundred at a time, flying under the radar. But they will lump together jobs created to make that look as big as possible.

And tRump will take credit, as a lie. And he'll inflate the number, as a double lie.

and THREE were Heeps. They ought to be investigated because a car company that makes complete garbage but manages to add to jobs must have illegal money pouring in from somewhere. My guess is Russia. Oh wait, what was that long standing deal that Fiat made with the Soviet Union? Something that happened way back in 1966 with the Lada?

Putin is giving money to Heep!

Carbon pollution is altering our climate and we continue to use the atmosphere as a sewer. These jobs are all based on burning petroleum which is slowly killing us all.

They will likely license hybrid or electric technology from another automaker, rather than develop it in-house.

The idea of an electric-drive Jeep with full torque at any RPM is kinda cool, actually. Make rock-crawling easier.
