With No Warning, House Republicans Vote to Hobble Independent Ethics Office

House Republicans, defying their top leaders, voted Monday to significantly curtail the power of an independent ethics office set up in 2008 in the aftermath of corruption scandals that sent three members of Congress to jail.

The move to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics was not public until late Monday, when Representative Robert Goodlatte, Republican of Virginia and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, announced that the House Republican Conference had approved the change with no advance public notice or debate.

In its place, a new Office of Congressional Complaint Review would be set up within the House Ethics Committee, which before the creation of the Office of Congressional Ethics had been accused of ignoring credible allegations of wrongdoing by lawmakers.

Speaker Paul D. Ryan and Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the majority leader, opposed the measure, aides said Monday night. The full House is scheduled to vote Tuesday on the rules, which will last for two years, until the next congressional elections.

15. Why would any party hobble the independent ethics office, unless they intend to raid & pillage?

The GOP war on America just started in earnest in their first course of action.

We are at war with a hostile presence in our government, intent at destroying, transferring wealth, raiding the treasury, and selling American assets to the highest bidder.

And FUCKING CNN has the nerve to show a picture of Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer under their GOP headline. What the freaking fuck!! We're getting faked newsed from every angle.

4. Not much of a surprise.

We already know that with Trump in the WH and the Republicans controling the Federal Government that the concept of ethics will be tossed out. God forbid if there was any office that might hinder their plans to pillage and rape this country dry.

5. Whaddya mean, with no warning?

The election results pretty much spelled it out.

Of course their number one priority is to make sure nothing they do gets investigated.

We should all call it once a week and complain about random things, from the weather to not being able to find a babysitter for Thursday night.

Because fuck these clowns.

13. Norman Eisen and Richard Painter Statement on House GOP Vote to Gut Office of Congressional Ethics

Washington, DC—In response to the House Republicans vote to weaken the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE) and kill its independence, Norman Eisen and Richard Painter, Chair and Vice Chair of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington released the following statement:

“Undermining the independence of the House’s Office of Congressional Ethics would create a serious risk to members of Congress, who rely on OCE for fair, nonpartisan investigations, and to the American people, who expect their representatives to meet their legal and ethical obligations. As CREW and others noted in a bipartisan letter a few weeks ago, OCE is one of the outstanding ethics accomplishments of the House of Representatives, and it has played a critical role in seeing that the congressional ethics process is no longer viewed as merely a means to sweep problems under the rug. If the 115th Congress begins with rules amendments undermining OCE, it is setting itself up to be dogged by scandals and ethics issues for years and is returning the House to dark days when ethics violations were rampant and far too often tolerated.”

Eisen served as the top ethics lawyer for President Barack Obama. Painter served as the top ethics lawyer for President George W. Bush.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) is a non-profit legal watchdog group dedicated to holding public officials accountable for their actions.
