Sanders Blasts Deal Between Carrier, Trump: Workers Should Be 'Nervous'
Source: Talking Points Memo
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Thursday blasted Donald Trump's reported deal to keep 1,000 Carrier jobs in Indiana, warning that the agreement could set a bad precedent for companies looking for tax breaks.
"Trump has endangered the jobs of workers who were previously safe in the United States. Why? Because he has signaled to every corporation in America that they can threaten to offshore jobs in exchange for business-friendly tax benefits and incentives," Sanders wrote in a Washington Post op-ed published Thursday morning. "Even corporations that werent thinking of offshoring jobs will most probably be re-evaluating their stance this morning. And who would pay for the high cost for tax cuts that go to the richest businessmen in America? The working class of America."
Trump and Carrier Corp. said this week that they will announce a deal on Thursday to keep 1,000 Carrier jobs in Indiana after the company announced it would be moving a plant to Mexico. In exchange for keeping some jobs in Indiana, Carrier will get a tax incentive package from the state. Trump and Pence also pledged to reduce federal regulations and make changes in the tax code during the negotiations, according to the New York Times.
Carrier's parent company, United Technologies, is a big federal defense contractor and likely had a big incentive to keep jobs in the U.S. and curry favor with the incoming administration.

I really hate all the working class fools who voted for this fucking fraud. Some of them get to keep their jobs today, but how long before they are moved, and at what cost to the country and themselves in the long term.

(20,567 posts)I think we know how that works. Probably just enough jobs to keep the tax breaks. Wonder how much the state is paying for 1,000 jobs.
Which if, or course, bogus. This whole "deal" smells weird. You don't move production to a low employment cost country to save $700 per employee, or around 33 cents an hour per employee. They were moving jobs to Mexico to save 33 cents and hour. I don't think so.
I suspect that Carrier was NEVER moving all those jobs and this was a bluff that they won, or the dollar figure is far, far higher than what is being reported.
I think you are right - it could have been just a dog and pony show for his supporters.

If you are now working in unsafe conditions with no recourse to complain or action taken to remedy...your job has NOT been saved.
If nepotism or favoritism places untrained or unqualified workers in position of higher pay...your job has NOT been saved.
If you are penalized, harassed or fired for looking into Union activity...you job has NOT been saved.
And you will know your job has NOT been saved...when you are told to train a new employee to take your job.

Sports teams are only the worst offenders everyone hears about because there's a giant new stadium, and cities have to buy property and such to keep them.

This should be called out daily, so marginalized workers recognize what is going on right under their noses.
The repug voter's say they voted for a change.
This is not change, as you so kindly pointed out.

(5,585 posts)The payroll cost of 1000 people is many, many times that amount. Even if all of those people only make 25k annually, that's still 25m in annual payroll carrier has to support, and Indiana gets to tax. The 700k sounds like a bullshit, fake number so that both sides can claim a win.
I'm not saying it was a good deal, and I suspect there were some handshakes regarding UTC's military contracts that we don't know about.
But this was definitely a huge PR win for Trump. A fraction of the tv time, news articles and whatnot are covering the details of the deal that we know now, versus the wall to wall coverage when he deal was announced.
Trump is a racist, misogynistic, classist asshole; but the man is a marketing genius.

Every detail will be 'front page' news and all over the media.
Their goal is separation of States.
Meanwhile...they slip by with slight of hand. Houdini was a genius, trump is an ass.
I've never seen a tv show of his or read a book of his, maybe you know more than I do. I just know about the people
he swindled and his bankruptcies.

... the fact that California workers from 300 Unions will be part of the 22K workers locally building this stadium. It was only discussed locally, as far as I can tell.
Who will diagnose this Carrier deal all over the media and explain the whole deal
and it's short and long term ramifications to the American worker?
