China Offers Muted Response to U.S. Hit Over Auto Duties

China offered a muted response to a U.S. move to challenge Chinese duties on American-made cars, an issue that industry insiders said has had only a modest impact on auto makers despite the intensified dispute.

China's Ministry of Commerce said in a brief Friday statement that it would deal "appropriately" with the Obama administration's move on Thursday to press the World Trade Organization to force China to stop imposing punitive duties on imports of some U.S. cars. It didn't elaborate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was even more cautious in its response, saying that trade friction and disputes were inevitable.

"We shouldn't let this disturb the big picture of developing bilateral relations between the two countries," said ministry spokesman Liu Weimin. "This will benefit the two countries."
