New poll shows Trump leading Clinton by 17 points in Utah
Source: Salt Lake Tribune
The poll of likely voters, conducted Oct. 12-14, shows Trump at 37 percent, with Clinton at 20 percent. Independent candidate Evan McMullin is tied with Clinton at 20 percent, while Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson and Green candidate Jill Stein polled at 7 percent and 1 percent, respectively.
Among Mormons, the poll revealed that 37 percent support Trump and 28 percent back McMullin, a member of the LDS Church. Just 11 percent of Mormons support Clinton.

I know we've all been hoping to turn the Beehive state blue, but unfortunately there is a high level of rabid anti-Clinton sentiment among Mormons and McMullin seems to be drawing many of the anti-Trump Mormons.

(4,494 posts)I hope I'm wrong, of course, but Republicans have a strong record of getting out the vote here, and we simply don't.

(21,506 posts)On a recent trip there I had two different strangers walk up to me and start complaining about Obama.
Never happened to me before or since.
I was not wearing anything to indicate I was or was not an Obama supporter
Was very odd
Obviously that could be a weird anomaly but I doubt it.

(1,474 posts)But, yeah, the rest of the state is WAY too credulous ... and Utah County is like the Taliban-lite.
I was JUST reading a post on Democratic Underground saying Utah was tied. People do seem willing to believe whatever reinforces their desires and/or prejudices.

Not the same as polling the whole population.

(525 posts)The poll was of all Utahns. They apparently also separated responses by religion.

(21,506 posts)My mistake.
That said there is also this
The poll of likely voters, conducted Saturday and Sunday by Rasmussen Reports shows a sensational result in Utah, where two points separates the top three candidates. Donald Trump has 30%, conservative Evan McMullin has 29%, and Hillary Clinton has 28%. Gary Johnson has collapsed to 5%, with Stein at 1%.
So not nearly as dire as that one poll seems to suggest and I suspect many of Mcmullins supporters will break for clinton come election day.
Also the poll I am referring to is rasmussen that tends to lean conservative.

(525 posts)Living in Utah, Clinton hate is generally more widespread than Trump hate. Even among millennials she's fairly unpopular. I expect she'll win millenials in the urban counties pretty easily, and she might take the few union counties in the coal belt, but that's about it. I would expect just about all of McMullin's supporters to be disaffected conservatives, who Clinton has basically no shot at.
In truth, the state isn't all that hostile to liberals culturally, but they are easily swayed by conservative lies. They'd like a generic liberal way more than Clinton. Sanders would have won the state. Easily. All those McMullin supporters would have broken for him... if they even appeared in the first place. I've heard deep-red, dyed in the wool conservatives praise Sanders here. Even those who regard him as old-school communist respected him as honest.

(24,395 posts)If too many of these red states give Hillary a razor-thin victory in their state, they'll expect a political reward for supporting Hillary.
Best if they vote for Trump and take their place among the political LOSERS of 2016. Then we and the D powerbase can ignore them and direct resources and attention to the real supporters of the progressive agenda.

(1,180 posts)That had it a lot closer: 34% Trump, 28% Clinton, & 20% McMullin.
It's no surprise that the Mormons really dislike HRC. She's coming in with an 0/2 count, being a Dem & a woman.

She's not going to get McMullin's votes. Trump will win all the state's electoral votes, if nothing changes from the above results, but there's a way she could game this to her advantage.

(44,973 posts)But other polls show the race is much closer between the three of them.
It really would make no sense to convince Clinton voters to vote for the other guy, considering the race is split right now and any of them has a chance of actually winning.

LOL = six times more support than Stein Man, that's gotta burn ... Go Jill
Polls close, but can you believe I lost large numbers of women voters based on made up events THAT NEVER HAPPENED. Media rigging election!
LOL. If media is rigging election, why are polls close? Moron!
The polls are close & getting closer. Especially between me and Jill Stein. Though Jill demands I stay away from her. IT'S A TOTAL DISASTER!
Democratic nominee picks up support from women, swing voters in latest WSJ/NBC News poll
Oct. 16, 2016
Hillary Clinton is consolidating a substantial lead over Donald Trump less than a month before Election Day, picking up support from women and swing voters as the Republican nominee navigates a roiling sex scandal, a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds.
Heading into the final presidential debate in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Mrs. Clinton led Mr. Trump by 11 percentage points among likely voters, 48% to 37%, a big jump from the six-point edge she held in mid-September.
Moreover, the Republican presidential nominee is losing his advantage on matters that were once the cornerstone of his campaign ...........
Polls are rigged. Trump has overwhelming support of people of color, women, Muslims, immigrants, and those fighting the oligarchy.
