New Film Tells the Story of Edward Snowden; Here Are the Surveillance Programs He Helped ExposeThis discussion thread was locked as off-topic by uppityperson (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum). OLIVER STONE’S LATEST film, “Snowden,” bills itself as a dramatized version of the life of Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower who revealed the global extent of U.S. surveillance capabilities. Stone’s rendering of Snowden’s life combines facts with Hollywood invention, covering Snowden being discharged from the military after an injury in basic training, meeting his girlfriend, and training in the CIA with fictitious mentors (including Nicolas Cage’s character, most likely a composite of whistleblowers like Thomas Drake and Bill Binney). Snowden then goes undercover, only to see an op turn ugly; becomes a contractor for the CIA and NSA; and finally chooses to leave the intelligence community and disclose its vast surveillance apparatus, some of which he helped develop. <snip> So here’s a retrospective of sorts for moviegoers and others interested in the journalism Edward Snowden made possible through his decision to become a whistleblower: In all, over 150 articles from 23 news organizations worldwide have incorporated documents provided by Snowden, and The Intercept and other outlets continue to mine the archive for stories of social and political significance. In the hope that Stone’s movie will spark more widespread interest in the NSA programs Snowden helped bring to light, The Intercept has compiled its stories based on the archive of documents, which can be explored through the chart below. Published Article Code Names <snip> Ultimately, the movie reflects Stone’s image of the life of an NSA contract employee. For a real window into the agency, there may be no better resource than the NSA’s own documents. In May 2016, The Intercept began the first concerted effort to make large portions of the Snowden archive available to the public with the release of a set of SIDtoday newsletters, the internal news organ of the Signals Intelligence Directorate at the NSA. The batch releases are ongoing and will likely constitute one of the largest single collections of NSA files. 2. Are you his agent?
This isn't breaking news, it's just BS. Snowden, and Greenwald, are not hero's. Hell I am still waiting for the proof that everyone in the U.S. was having their conversations recorded, and still waiting for the "big" list of everyday people that Greewald said would be released to prove everyone was being recorded.
Snowden should feel lucky he isn't in prison right now. He should just sit back an enjoy the coming Russian winter! ![]() |

5. There's no "trust issue" with the President, but Snowden is viewed unfavorably by 2/3 of the....
American people. Two thirds of the American people don't agree on much, but many think Snowden is Putin's puppet, and a traitor.

6. I'd have to see that fact, it is a fact him and Jullian Assange exposed the government along
with President, Secretary of State Clinton, and many others as less than honest, Hence they vilify him like Smedley Butler another " traitor" .

Voters Want Edward Snowden Trial
The White House recently rejected a petition calling for the Obama administration to pardon Edward Snowden, the former spy who exposed the National Security Agency’s bulk surveillance program. Voters not only agree with that position but also want to see the whistleblower tried in court, according to a new poll. https://morningconsult.com/2015/08/11/voters-want-edward-snowden-trial/ Edward Snowden Unpopular at Home, A Hero Abroad, Poll Finds The whistleblower is viewed negatively by 64 percent of Americans familiar with him, results say. A poll of Americans and people living in nine other Western countries has found exiled whistleblower Edward Snowden is far more popular abroad than he is at home. http://www.usnews.com/news/articles/2015/04/21/edward-snowden-unpopular-at-home-a-hero-abroad-poll-finds That last poll was taken by the ACLU & I'm guessing these weren't the results they were hoping for. Ironically, President Obama stands at nearly 60% approval right now. I think that approval would drop by 20 points if he pardoned this overprivileged asshole. It certainly wouldn't be fair to the hundreds of thousands who are locked up on minor charges. Treason is not small change. |

12. Saw it Wednesday, it was very good.
Also saw the "Snowden Live" interview afterward, with Oliver Stone and the actors who played Snowden and his girlfriend.
That was also very good, hope it gets released to youtube or something. |

8. Snowden is now seeking a pardon from Obama. Why? Unless he did something wrong,
there is no reason for a pardon.
It was all good and legal right? Hey Eddie boy, better get comfy living in Russia a little bit longer. About 8 years longer. President Hillary Clinton won't be welcoming you back. |

9. "In all, over 150 articles from 23 news organizations"
and not one mentions Bush, Cheney, or the 2010 NSA reforms initiated by their successor which were substantial and far-reaching. Yes, I checked. That's a lot of RW spew even for Libertarians. But news it ain't.
